Emergency assistance from SVDP in Tuscaloosa County

The faith based charity agency known as Saint Vincent de Paul (also as Holy Spirit Catholic Church) offers an extensive range of transitional, emergency and long-term support services. There is also social services care for residents living in poverty.

The assistance is intended for short term support. Whether it is small dollar amounts for paying bills or  transportation, affordable child care, or help with job searches, assistance is available. The long term assistance is will help people develop life plans so clients can identify their individual paths to self-sufficiency. In effect, the resources available are extensive and effective.

Society of Saint Vincent, and its partners, also try to help with healthcare needs. As Alabama has too many residents that lack medical or dental insurance. Or they have pre-existing conditions such as cancer, diabetes, weight issues, need for insulin, or something else. The Society of Saint Vincent may be able to pass out vouchers or discounted generic prescription drugs. Or they work with clinics, including mobile community clinics with doctors or dentists in Tuscaloosa County, to give care. Or get help with Medicaid, disability and other needs or give out lists of places for free insulin.

Get free food, meals, clothes and basic needs from St. Vincent in Tuscaloosa

The Society of Saint Vincent has an emergency food pantry on site as well as a “non-food” pantry which gives out clothes and other household goods (maybe even free furniture). Any current clients (or potential applicants) are asked to call ahead. They will need to make an intake appointment in order to get groceries, applications to SNAP, clothing for their family or kids, or free food. There is a brief application process in place too.

If there is a crisis, then walk-in clients may need to wait. But if patient, and still qualified, they may be able to get emergency food even if they walked in. This is done as soon as possible by St. Vincent staff; but there may be a wait. Note all these items passed out are the result of donations from the public.

When found qualified for assistance, each client household receives enough food for a few days. The contents of the box will vary. In addition, the family will be asked about other basic needs services they may need. As there is a database of everything from housing to shelter, USDA benefits, transportation, and more. Or find other free food pantries and soup kitchens in Alabama.
