The regional community action agency is the Salisbury-Rowan Community Action Agency. They help fight poverty, address employment and energy bill needs and provide applications to government grants.

  • Free home modifications and minor repairs to help people save energy are offered. Another of the programs offered by the community action agency include Weatherization. This program will help low income, qualified individuals (in particular senior or the disabled) reduce their home energy and utility bills by installing free energy conserving updates to their homes.
  • The self-sufficiency Program from Salisbury-Rowan Community Action Agency can also help people in need. The program provides people with social services and financial resources to help them become self-sufficient over the long term. The program may also provide people with information on how to access government programs to help pay expenses such as rent, home energy and cooling bills, and other aid.
  • Emergency help is offered. A couple main goals of the SRCAA community action agency is to help Rowan County and nearby families stay housed and meet their nutritional goals. To this end, case managers may have referrals to emergency rental assistance programs, homeless prevention programs and food banks.   • The currently homeless can learn about low income housing or grant programs to pay a security deposit fee or first months rent. There are also homeless shelters, low-income apartments, and transitional housing units in Rowan County, including for people overcoming addictions.

The Salisbury and Rowan County Salvation Army, which can be reached at 704-636-6491, offers information on numerous assistance programs. The Christian, faith based charity is located at  20 Bringle Ferry Rd, Salisbury, NC 28144 and may have limited financial assistance to distribute to those in need of help. Among other services they offer transitional housing, free holiday and Christmas assistance including toys from Angel Tree, and other aid.

The Rowan Helping Ministries Crisis Assistance Network has limited immediate financial help on a first come first serve basis. For those with proof of hardship, the charity organization has emergency financial assistance for paying utilities, rent, water/sewer bills, and prescription medications. There are also free food boxes, clothes for adults or kids and household items. Any financial assistance or grants is given out based on funds available.

  • There are several other resources available from the churches that are part of the crisis network. They include free meals from Soup Kitchens or a food pantry. Rowan County Department of Social Services oversees many of the public aid as well as government benefit programs. Funds for paying heating and cooling bills may be offered from Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP). The Low Income Energy Assistance Program at the state level, and the program will provide people with a one-time utility bill payment that is issued in February each year to assist qualified families with heating bills and funds can be used to pay other energy bills as well.

Financial help rowan County NCRowan County Cooperative Christian Ministry is a faith based charity made up of local churches. They partner together to offer everything from transitional housing to free food and funds for utility bills or other expenses. Non-profit as well as charity housing and rent assistance programs will assist tenants that are facing eviction. Another option is to apply for a grant from a social service office. Various resources are available for residents, including the elderly, to help them pay a portion of their rent or other housing expenses that may be past due. Help with food in Salisbury NC area

Main Street Mission, located at 308 South Main Street, China Grove, NC 28023, runs a food pantry for the working poor, the unemployed, or those on fixed income. Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church has a free food distribution center, including Meals on Wheels service at 719 S Caldwell St, Salisbury, NC 28144. Call (704) 633-5057. They have a food bank and soup kitchen.

Tabernacle Baptist Church is a charity that feeds the low-income, homeless, single moms and others. The food bank is at 2515 E Innes St, Salisbury, NC 28146. they also have free Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. Call (704) 636-6653.

Free community health care centers and clinics in Rowan County

Community Care Clinic of Rowan - The site provides free primary dental, medical care, and prescription assistance. It is for low income and uninsured qualifying Rowan County and Salisbury adult residents as well as patients on Medicaid or Medicare.
