A number of rent assistance programs can help Rockland County families pay their housing costs. Find churches, charities, and government resources that can help with back rent, moving costs or security deposits, or that give free motel or hotel vouchers. Or locate homeless shelters, storage deposit help for people moving, section 8 rent subsidized houses or apartments, and other resources. Regardless of race, religion, age, or ethnicity, there is financial help to pay rent as well as other housing costs in Rockland County, however the focus is on the elderly, single moms or the disabled.

In addition to emergency financial aid for bills, such as rent, mortgages, or utilities, there are also free homeless shelters. Or section 8 housing choice vouchers in Rockland County. Or tenants can get free legal advice to stop an eviction or apply for loans to help pay rent in Rockland County. Salvation Army in Rockland County offers many housing, homeless shelter and rent assistance programs as part of their social services. These are emergency, one time financial aid programs. Grants or small dollar amounts can pay for back rent, utilities, or other costs to stop homelessness. There are also homeless shelters (including for drug abusers), transitional housing programs, and/or security deposit help. The locations are below.

  • There is also the local Suffern Salvation Army for residents of that town/city. The address is 201 Lafayette Ave., Suffern, New York 10901. Call (845) 368-7200.

Catholic Community Churches and Services of Rockland provides financial aid and case management. The address is 78 Hudson Ave in Haverstraw, NY 10927. Apply for emergency loans or grants for rent or mortgage help, deposit assistance (utility or security), furniture for an apartment, and more. There is also emergency relief to stop evictions, which may give some money for back rent.

Call (845) 942-5791 to inquire into Homelessness and Eviction Prevention as well as Rapid Rehousing Case management. Call the churches to get help for Rockland County homeless individuals and families to obtain permanent housing.

 

 

 

Rockland County DSS operates homeless prevention programs as well as cash aid. Call 845-364-2000. A major focus is on coordinating legal aid with Rockland County attorneys. They may also help low income families, seniors, or the disabled apply for ESG grants to pay rent. Or learn about housing alternatives, emergency shelter, and get help with negotiating rent arrears. Section 8 housing is offered from a few locations in Rockland County. These are rent subsidized homes for the poor, low income, elderly, and disabled. Emergency vouchers can be offered too.

New City and Rockland County Community Action Agency offers grants for bills, back rent help, employment support, credit counseling and more. The goal is to help very low income families with everything from energy costs to housing needs. More on rent help from Rockland County Community Action.

Good Counsel Homes is a shelter and transitional housing program for women including single moms and those that are pregnant. Also access meals, job training, counseling, and more, along with housing. The address is 22 Linden Avenue, Spring Valley, NY, 10977. Or dial 845-356-0517.

Legal Aid Society helps low income families, minorities, and the elderly. Free eviction defense from attorneys, including help in housing court. Interfaith Coalition for the Homeless, also known as Helping Hands, provides various forms of housing, financial assistance, and support. Clients can learn about rent or homeless shelters, be placed into a winter warming center (Safe Haven), or get referred to deposit help among other programs.
