They provide subsidized housing to single parents or the elderly. There is also emergency rent assistance, free basic needs, a food bank, and financial help for utility bills and medical expenses.

 

 

 

Churches and Catholic Charities of Jackson provide the working poor and low income with resources. Qualified clients will be able to meet with a case manager for an assessment. Mississippi Regional Housing Authority provides section 8, home buying advice, counseling and other support to Jackson County. Jackson County churches and Saint Vincent de Paul is a leading charity in southern Mississippi. The organization can support working poor and low income families, regardless of their religion. While they depend on donations and volunteers, and resources are limited, some financial aid may be available.

This includes, but is not limited to, free food, holiday meals, transitional housing, or furniture. Department of Human Services, or DHS in Jackson County, offers government benefits as well as public assistance. These can be both state or federal programs, and range from Mississippi cash aid (TANF welfare) to Medicaid applications, SNAP food stamps, or SSI disability applications. Community Action Programs to help with bills or basic needs

The Jackson County Civic Action Committee, Inc. which is headquartered at 5343 Jefferson St., Moss Point, MS 39562, phone: (228) 769-3292, administers the low income energy assistance program for the area. The LIHEAP program, which is funded by the federal government, will assist qualified low to moderate income families and households in paying their electric or utility bills. A household may be eligible to apply for the low income assistance program on an annul basis. There are two types of assistance that people can qualify for and that are offered:

  • The first is known as emergency assistance, and it is for a crisis or life threatening situations, such as someone about to have their service disconnected or if they run out of fuel.
  • The second type of aid is just regular, and this is for non life threatening situations and short term help.

The goal of the program is to focus on low to moderate income households who meet the program eligibility criteria. Apply early, as the funding is limited and assistance is provided on a first come, first serve basis and it is limited.

Other programs that run by the Jackson County Civic Action Committee, Inc. as well. They include the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG), weatherization as well as referrals to public aid.   • Weatherization Assistance Program will help people save on and reduce energy and electric bills. Services provided by the program and that are offered include air sealing,  testing, repairs or replacement heating and cooling units or space heaters, additional wall and / or floor insulation, minor repairs and cleaning and other home upgrades.

Free food assistance programs in Jackson County Mississippi

Lord Is My Help – The non-profit agency provides a Congregate Meals site, Meals on Wheels, and a food pantry for individuals and families. The charity will work to help anyone need of food, free groceries and meals. Charities that provide free food - Those are only two locations to try. There are other non-profits around Pascagoula and other towns that can be turned to in an emergency. Free health clinics and free medical centers

Singing River Medical Clinic (East Central Medical Center) - RHC East Central Medical Center. This community clinic offers General Medical Care and a sliding fee scale for the low income and uninsured. There may be some free basic dental care as well for the uninsured or people on Medicaid. Coastal Family Health Care – A homeless health clinic offers a number of resources to help people manage their medical bills. One is community outreach, which is an ongoing and integral part of the needs of the Jackson County Mississippi region. The clinic offers dental, medical, substance abuse counseling, social services as well as medical help for chronic conditions.
