California has been hit hard by the nation’s weak economy, and thousands of Yuba County families are struggling to make ends meet. Luckily there are places for them to turn to in order to get help with bills, rent, housing expenses, and free food. Learn about your options and the services that are available.

Free food for the hungry

Yuba-Sutter Gleaners Food Bank, Inc., which can be reached at (530) 673-3834, strives to reduce the number of hungry people and focuses its programs on the poor, homeless, unemployed, and the low income in Yuba County California.

Yuba health care services

Harmony Health Family Resource Center has as its goal the mission of serving as the primary provider of community services and health related services to improve health, education and economic development of overburdened families and individuals in Yuba County California. Phone (530) 742-5049.

Health and medical care for children

Yuba-Sutter School-Based Health Clinics is one of the leading agencies that is providing medical and health care to children who are unable to afford the care, and bring them to optimal health. Dial (530) 749-3326.

Senior assistance programs

The Yuba-Sutter Legal Center for Seniors provides area seniors and the elderly with free legal services to help them obtain both federal government and state of California benefits, ensure they live in safe homes and provide them access to medical care so they can remain independent. Locate programs that help with bills and housing

Salvation Army, Yuba Corps, which can be reached at (530) 216-4530, provides low income and working poor with free emergency food, limited rent and housing help, shelter and utility bill assistance. The programs are available to families and individuals in a crisis situation. The Yuba City residential and drop-in programs target homeless families and individuals on the brink of evictions.

Another non-profit to contact is the Yuba County Community Development and Services Agency. This is a non-profit community action agency that provides people with immediate support, and also works to ensure people get back on their feet and are successful over the long term. They administer numerous assistance programs, and also can refer people to other agencies, charities, and non-profit organizations.

  • Housing Assistance - The agency can direct people to homeless prevention programs, and information on how to get rent help.
  • Self Sufficiency Program - Gain access to programs such as debt and credit counseling, tools to help find a job, and other programs that ensure long term success.

Yuba County St. Vincent is a faith based, church organization that can help families living in poverty. The charity may provide clothing, household supplies, or food to feed seniors or children of low income households.
