Salvation Army York County Maine assistance programs.

Low-income families in York County and southern Maine will get help from the Salvation Army. Some short term emergency help is offered for rent, utility bills, food boxes or clothing. Clients will also be able to enroll into longer term self-sufficiency type resources, such as counseling. Or get information on job training, school supplies for kids or Christmas toys as well as employment assistance in Maine, including in Alfred.

Free basic needs including food, clothes, and educational items

Basic needs and assistance is available from the agencies clothing closet and free food pantry. Case workers can not only help people access the resources, but they can provide referrals as needed as well. Social workers partner with the client to help them meet their short term needs. However, importantly, the Salvation Army will also work with lower income clients to find a long-term solution for those who come into their care.

York County Main school and educational programs are offered as well. A major one is the free school supply giveaway programs during the summer and fall months. Registered low income families with students (elementary, middle or high school) can get supplies for their students. This may be backpacks, notebooks, chromebooks, tablets or similar items. Students can also get free personal toileteries or uniforms, haircuts and other goods, and the rural parts of the state can apply for school supplies in the mail.

Christmas and free holiday assistance is offered in York County from the Salvation Army and its Angel Tree program. This special, seasonal service provides new toys and/or clothing for children of low income and otherwise needy families.

The way this program works is that each and every Angel Tree will be decorated with numbered paper angel tags. It will contain the child's age, first name, gender and what it is that they need for the holiday. Those people from the state of Maine who want to contribute will need to remove a tag from the tree and then purchase what the child needs. The Salvation Army oversees this entire process and they will ensure that the gift or clothing gets to the child in question.

The southern Maine food pantry will help families eat free, healthy, and otherwise nutritious meals when times are tough. The pantry can be used to help free up a clients money so that they can pay for other bills. Those households that qualify for this resource will be able to obtain food or groceries to feed their family three meals a day. Eligibility is determined based on your circumstances, including household income and number of family members. They can use the pantry every few months as well.

The items available will depend on donations. Therefore the exact types, amounts and varieties of food provided will depend on what is available at that moment. All donations come from people across the community.
