Washington DC uninsured health care programs.

Many Washington DC families lack health insurance or their current plans are very limited. For those individuals that are considered as being uninsured, the federal government and other organizations can provide them access to health care services. Regardless of the reason why you lack insurance, whether it is due to a job loss or maybe your employer just doesn’t offer it, many District of Columbia residents still have options.

However the number of programs and resources available is limited. Also the demand for assistance is very high and only a limited number of applicants will meet qualifications. While more details on the medical bills assistance programs are below, some of what can be provided includes prescriptions, emergency care, cancer screenings, mental health, and more.

The District of Columbia Aids Drug Assistance Program is for the under and uninsured. The federal government program will provide free HIV-related drugs to individuals living with HIV/AIDS. Their caregivers can also look into this on their behalf. Call 202-671-4900.

The non-profit DC Healthcare Alliance provides a number of assistance programs for uninsured residents. Some of what may be offered includes outpatient and Inpatient medical care, emergency services, preventative and home health care, free prescription drugs, urgent care, rehabilitative services, dental services and cleanings, and wellness. Pregnant mothers and their newborns may also qualify for help. Call 202-639-4030 for information.

SCHIP / Healthy Families is for children. Their families need to meet low to moderate income levels as set by the government. If they meet condition, then the government can pay for a number of medical bills. Just a few examples include the following. Vision care, contact lenses and eyeglasses. Regular doctor visits, immunizations, family planning, and school physicals are covered by SCHIP. A few other types of bills that can be paid for in Washington DC include transportation to doctor appointments, prescription medications, hospital stays, and labor costs. Telephone 202-639-4030.

Medicaid is available in Washington DC. Call 202-727-5355 for intake. It offers free quality health care services to eligible low-income: pregnant women, children, disabled individuals, and uninsured families with children. Medicaid will pay for many things and most of your health care needs, including dental costs. There is no cost or expenses due for those who meet low income and poverty guidelines. Most hospitals and doctors accept Medicaid as a method of payment.

 

 

 

Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan / PCIP is for citizens or legal residents who can’t get private insurance due to a pre-existing issue. They need to have been looking for 6 months and have been denied coverage because of that medical condition. All covered benefits are available for DC residents even if it's to treat a pre-existing condition. There are three different plans to choose from, and there will also be premiums, deductibles and out of pocket limits due from participants for each one.

Project WISH, or Women Into Staying Healthy- Breast & Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program is for the under and uninsured. The municipality will provide free cancer education, screening and services to low-income and so called medically under-served women in the District of Columbia. Some of what is available is an annual mammogram, related diagnostic services, Pap test, clinical breast exam, and even transportation to the testing site. Call the program at 202-442-9170.

Uninsured children and their parents can benefit from Vaccines for Children Program. Dial 202-576-9317 for information or to apply. It will offer low cost vaccines for children and teenagers. Clinics around the District of Columbia provide the shots. They can address and prevent conditions including hepatitis, Dipththeria, influenza, measles, tetanus, and much more.
