Christmas, Thanksgiving and holiday assistance from VOA - Volunteers of America.

Volunteers of America runs a wide variety of free Christmas assistance programs, ranging from Adopt a Family to Holiday Hope, free meal services, and more. The charity assists tens of thousands of people across America each year, ranging from children from single mom or dad run households that need a free Christmas gift to veterans, the homeless, and working poor. Find free holiday help from a VOA near you.

While a focus is on veterans and homeless people, senior citizens as well as the homebound often also turn to VOA for holiday cheer, including hot meals too. The overall goal of Volunteers of America is to provide short term relief, including during the holidays, as well as long term assistance.

VOA free Christmas help

The free VOA holiday programs, including toys and meals, can go by various names. Each local office may call the Christmas program their own unique name, but they will commonly be called Adopt a family, free Toys, the Joy Fund or plain old holiday meals. No matter the name, each is focused on doing the same thing, and that is helping the less fortunate. What may be provided by Volunteers of America includes the following:

  • Free toys for kids.
  • Free food boxes for families, individuals, the elderly, disabled, or mentally ill.
  • Christmas and Thanksgiving meals are often served at a VOA feeding site or pantry.
  • In addition to the holiday resources, they offer other support including basic needs, financial aid, shelter, housing, veteran support and more.

Even if a VOA center near you does not operate a holiday program for a certain year, they will often have referrals as to where someone can go for the assistance they need. As the Volunteers of America are one of the nation’s leading social service agencies. So even when they do not have the resources to help the less fortunate, they will direct anyone in need as to where they can go for help.

Holiday assistance is focused on some groups that VOA is most involved with though. This includes veterans as well as active members of the military, including their spouses, survivors and children. They also provide free Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners to the homeless, as well as maybe give them a blanket, hygiene kit or article of clothing.

Not only do they offer a wide variety of Christmas assistance programs, but they help the low-income during Thanksgiving too. That will mostly involve serving free hot meals, including Turkey dinners. Or they may deliver a Thanksgiving meal to the homebound. In either case, Volunteers of America provides help the less fortunate during the major holidays.

Holiday donations and volunteers

All of the VOA holiday programs depend on volunteers and donations from the community. Each local office administers their own version of Christmas or Thanksgiving help. The staff at the center can go over the details of what someone may or may not qualify for. when it comes to donations, each VOA office needs toys, clothes, gifts, monetary donations, gift cards, and other contributions from the community. All of those items will be provided to needy children and other clients.

Another service is on feeding the low income, hungry, and lonely during the holiday season. Really anyone in need can stop by for a free, hot holiday meal. Volunteers of America therefore needs people to work in the pantries and soup kitchens. They also need donated food, turkeys, meat, and more so that free Thanksgiving dinner meals and holiday assistance can be provided. VOA will also try to (based on resources) offer a free holiday Meals on Wheels Service.

Apply for Christmas and Thanksgiving assistance from VOA

As noted, there are multiple offices across the country. Each offers their own services. If there are no Christmas toy program, meal services, or other programs offered then Volunteers of America will offer referrals. Not only can them offer free support at Christmas and/or Thanksgiving, but they can provide assistance year round on an number of need. Find a list of local Volunteer of America locations.
