Vigo County assistance programs.

Get information and access to low to moderate income assistance programs in Terre Haute and Vigo County Indiana. Various non-profit agencies and charities can provide free food, funds for utility and heating bills, rent assistance, counseling, and additional aid. Learn about the services and resources available to you.

Non-profit agencies that provide help

Catholic Charities in Terre Haute serves the poor, the homeless, the elderly, the neglected children and the needy from the Vigo County region. The Bethany House Emergency Shelter offers housing for individuals and families and the Clothes Closet is also located there. In addition to that program, by partnering with 90+ other nonprofit emergency food assistance agencies, Terre Haute Catholic Charities Foodbank provides the equivalent of 2.5 million meals each year to more than 32,000 individuals living in west central Indiana.

Another service is the Ryves Youth Cente. The locationr offers educational and recreational activities as well as meals to youth ages 5-17. The Christmas Store provides new clothing, household items and personal hygiene products to families during the Christmas holiday. For more information, please call (812)232-1447.

The Catholic Charities of Terre Haute runs several low income assistance programs and provides assistance to those in need of help. Get access to the Bethany House for homeless housing, Clothes Closet, Soup Kitchen, two Simeon Houses for elderly and Day Activities program, Food Bank and pantry serving agencies and charities with food programs, Free Household Exchange, Ryves Hall Youth Center for children, and a Free Christmas Store. Terre Haute based Salvation Army, which can be reached at 232.4081, provides a variety of assistance programs. The non-profit agency is dedicated to the physical, emotional, material, social and spiritual needs of the poor and needy. They may from time to time have limited financial assistance available for paying utility and heating bills, rent and housing expenses, and money for other needs.

 

 

 

More specifically, they partner with other Indiana based agencies and together the aid they can provide includes financial assistance for first time new employment; energy needs, medical appointments, food, rent and mortgage assistance. Vigo County community action agency

The area is served by Western Indiana Community Action Agency, Inc. They are based in Terre Haute but serve low to moderate income and other needy families and individuals across the region. Call them at (812) 232-1264. Some of the programs they administer include those listed below. The services and resources they offer are all listed below.

Low income health care - The formal name for the service is The Indigent Medical Care Program. The program helps address the need for high quality, low cost or free medical care for those low-income households who are not able to afford to pay for their medical and hospital bills. The program provides treatment to those who lack health insurance coverage.

Staff who are part of the Indigent Medical Care program coordinate efforts with Vigo County doctors, physicians, specialists, medical centers, hospitals, health care clinics, laboratories and testing facilities to provide medical care and health care service to low-income households at no cost to them. In addition, from time to time the Indigent Medical Care Program has been able to provide limited financial assistance for paying for prescription medication through the generosity of private donations to the health care program. Funds for summer cooling and winter heating bills - The Western Indiana Community Action Agency, Inc offers Vigo County residents access to an Energy Bill Assistance Program. It helps over 5,000 people each year deal with the costs  of home energy bills. There are two main components to the program. The Program's heating bill assistance program season begins in October. The second stage is the summer cooling and air conditioning bill assistance program. That starts in June of each and every year.

Home Repairs and Weatherization Program - These programs were created repair homes, ensure they are safe, and to also insulate and tighten up homes of the low to moderate income in an effort to reduce heating bills and costs and improve the overall comfort level of the home.

Referrals and Information - Community action agencies are always a great resource to learn about all low income programs and options available. They can refer people to federal government and state of Indiana assistance programs. Learn about mortgage assistance, debt and foreclosure counseling, loans for paying security deposits or rent and other services.

Location of free food and basic needs in Vigo County

The main place to turn to for assistance is a local food pantry. The centers focus on two main issues. They include ensuring that every family, child, and individual has some form of groceries to feed their family. Non-profits can also bring other support to the community, often in the form of clothing, household goods, and applications to WIC or food stamps. Some of the main sites are below.

Salvation Army has referrals, lists of local food pantries, and holiday assistance along with school supplies. Case managers can be reached at (812) 235-0436.
