Salvation Army assistance programs in Vermont.

Whether you need a meal, help with bills, or case management, the Salvation Army centers in Vermont may be able to offer assistance. The organizations listed below run a number of social services and emergency assistance programs for the less fortunate and working poor. A focus is on offering food for meals, keeping people warm during the winter (heating bill assistance), and preventing homelessness. They also try to offer longer term stabilization, which can come from a new job or financial workshops.

Food pantries and soup kitchens can offer aid, including meals to anyone in need. Most of the Salvation Army centers offer this for free and the resources are open to all who need help. Meals and food distribution are often prepared by charity groups, churches, local companies, restaurants and generous individuals.

While limited, direct emergency assistance may be offered to qualified individuals on a limited basis. The Social Service offices in Vermont are generally open five days a week. The Salvation Army realizes that every situation is different, and they will deal with people on a personal level. Some of what can be offered is as follows. Or if they can’t meet your need, the Salvation Army will generally offer ideas and referrals to who can assist.

  • Holiday programs include hot meals, Christmas toys, food bags, warm coats, and Thanksgiving meals.
  • Financial assistance may include heating or fuel oil, emergency rent help (to prevent an eviction or homelessness), or prescription assistance.
  • Many locations distribute emergency food boxes, or have unique programs for senior citizens.
  • Referrals are also given. A case manager can refer a client to discounted heating oil networks that cover Vermont, free school supply donation programs, and other resources.

Almost every day, the Salvation Army in Vermont gets requests for help from fire victims, the unemployed, transients, and those needing a little help. They will do their best to meet this need, and every day case managers and volunteers fight for those living on the margins of life. Call an office to make an appointment.

Disaster assistance programs are a key focus of the Salvation Army. Whether natural or manmade, resources are available. Volunteers and staff from the Salvation Army are often among the first on location. They can offer help for those critical needs, such as shelter, clothing, food, and more. They may set up mobile feeding trucks and/or canteens, serve hot or cold drinks, soup, water, sandwiches, and much more. They also work closely with emergency management personnel and many other government organizations.

Food pantries are available to the needy in the community. The centers are always responding to an increasing number of requests for services, including meals or affordable food, as people struggle to meet other obligations and bills. There are some cases in which the Vermont Salvation Army can help in a crisis, or they may refer the low income family to government benefits such as application sites for emergency food stamps.

For example, by the Salvation Army providing food it frees up cash for people to pay for other expenses like rent, energy or heating bills while keeping food on the table for their families. By offering the needy and low income perishable items canned goods, they are meeting one of the most basic human needs. Call to make an appointment to use the services of a pantry.

The food pantry provides yet another opportunity for our people in the community and volunteers to help. If you would like to be involved or donate, call to get more information.

Holiday assistance, including Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas, provides people with a sense of joy and tradition. Especially during difficult times, acknowledging holiday customs can provide a sense of peace and relief for lower income individuals and families in Vermont. Seniors and the homebound may also benefit. Some of the programs that can help people include when centers distribute free Christmas toys, food baskets, and holiday meals. The programs go by the names of Angel Tree, Adopt a Family and more.
