Vehicles for Change car program.

Vehicles for Change provides free cars to low-income families in Maryland, Washington DC as well as Northern Virginia. The regional non-profit organization provides a very low cost (and sometimes free) car, truck, SUV or other form of transportation for employment reasons. Find how to get a low cost auto from Vehicles for Change.

All resources are limited and the charity depends on donated vehicles from the public or companies. Any donated automobiles are then given to qualified low-income families or single people. Vehicles for Change, also known as VFC, will not only provide a free ASE certified repaired car or truck so the individual can get a job, attend career training, and have transportation needed to help them gain financial stability.

Cars or trucks in MD, DC or VA from Vehicles for Change

All of the VFC automobiles given out to approved clients will be “used”. However Vehicle for Change does have the cars, trucks, SUV, motorcycles, etc. repaired so they are drivable before they are given to a client. There are volunteer mechanics, all of which are Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified that do the repair work, whether it is for a Ford, Toyota, Honda or any type of auto. Find details about mechanics that fix cars for free.

There will be other needed updates done to the vehicle too, such as any parts that are in bad shape will be fixed and/or replaced. VFC will provide a limited warranty to the work that was done as well with the vehicle.

Some people in the District of Columbia, Virginia or Maryland will be given a free car from Vehicles for Change. However in most cases the beneficiary will need to pay a small cost for the vehicle. This may be anywhere from $500 to $3,000 or so (generally around $1,000).

If the applicant to VFC does not have the funds to buy the auto, then Vehicles for Change will provide a low-interest rate loan. This is done in partnership with credit unions and other lenders in Virginia and Maryland. Low-income families with bad or limited credit can also get a car or truck from the VFC program.

As noted a free auto may be provided, but most people will get a low-cost car. The cars that are sold by Vehicles for Change (at a low cost) will have a monthly payment that is due. In general, the cost of the VFC loan will be under $100 dollars a month. One big reason that Vehicles for Change charges a low fee, and has monthly payment due, is so that the low-income family gets “experience” budgeting, allocating their income and also has the opportunity to build credit.

Families that get a car will also need to pay for any sales or fees that are required in MD or VA. There will also be additional costs for tags, titles, registration and insurance – Vehicles for Change only provides the car or truck and they do not handle any other costs of ownership. It goes without saying that VFC will only assist people that have a valid driver's license, that are insurable and have no past DWI or substance abuse infractions, and that are historically safer drivers. Applicants also need to have a job, or be about to start one that involved about 30 hours per week.

Additional transportation and auto assistance is arranged by community action agencies or other non-profits in the region. They will help people get bus passes or train tickets (including Amtrak), provide information on car repairs or low-cost vehicles and more. Read more on community action transport programs near you.
