How the Upside app works and saves you money on gas.

The Upside app provides people with discounts, rewards, and cash rebates. The free mobile app, which is available for download on iOS and Google Play (Android), partners with thousands of gas stations in an effort to pass savings to consumers. Learn more on the Upside app, how the company makes money (as there is always a catch), and get details on how much money you can save on your gasoline purchases.

How to use the Upside App

The app is easy to get, download and use. It is available on iOS as well as Android phones or tablets. There is a user-friendly interface and it is easy to navigate, including for seniors, English as Second Language speakers, and people who are not as familiar with apps.

  1. Download and install the Upside app on your smartphone. As noted, it is available, for free, in the Apple iOS store as well as Google Play. It can be downloaded to a cell phone or tablet.
  2. Create an account on the app.
  3. Find participating gas stations in your area using the app. You can search by zip code, city, state, and even for planning out a trip. There are over 45,000 stations in the network, including Shell, Exxon Mobil, Circle K, Citgo, Phillips 66, Murphy USA, Chevron and others.
  4. Purchase gasoline at a participating gas station using a credit or debit card that is linked to your Upside app account.
  5. Receive rewards and discounts on gasoline purchases. Depending on the amount of gas bought over a month, and other factors, people can earn about 25 cents in rebates/cash back per gallon.

How the Upside App helps people save on gas

The Upside app offers gasoline discounts, free cashback or products and rewards for users who purchase gasoline at participating gas stations. It will help you save money on gas in several ways. First, by earning cashback on your gas purchases, you'll effectively be paying less for each gallon of gas. For example, if you earn 10% cashback on a $40 gas purchase, you'll effectively be paying $36 for that gas.

Second, the Upside App can help you find the cheapest gas prices in your community using the location finder The app includes a feature that allows you to search for gas stations near you and compare their prices. You can find a station by your home, work area or places you commute too and plan out your trips. By finding the cheapest gas prices, you can save money on every gallon of gas you purchase.

Finally, the Upside App offers additional one-time rewards and often sweepstakes or bonuses that can help you save even more money. For example, the app may offer bonus cashback rewards for purchasing a certain amount of gas or for purchasing gas from a specific gas station.

Instant savings from Upside are discounts that are applied immediately to your gasoline purchase. These discounts on the gas you purchase range from anywhere from 1% to 25% cashback on your monthly gas purchases. Cash back rewards are earned over time and are applied to your Upside account. Once you’ve earned a certain amount of cash back, you can withdraw it to your bank account or use it for future gasoline purchases. The funds will go to your Upside account balance.

The amount of savings and rewards that you can earn with the Upside app varies depending on the participating gas stations in your area, and as noted above it may be as high as 25% off. Some gas stations may offer higher discounts and rewards than others. Regardless, any family, whether low-income or not, who is looking for a quick, easy and legitimate way to save money, the Upside app will help with that.

in addition to the Upside savings, a number of charities also offer free gas vouchers as well as cards in a crisis, such as for a job interview or emergency medical appointment. In general, a few gallons of gasoline may be provided to a low income family. Locate a free gas card.

Note, to get savings, users will need to link their credit/debit card to the Upside app. This also means that a person needs to have an account, and Upside may not help the “un-banked” who do not have a card to link too. Also some users may be hesitant to link their card to the app for security reasons.

Once you've earned a certain amount of cashback, you can withdraw it from your Upside account and transfer it to your bank account or PayPal account.

What is the catch with Upside app?

Like most things in life (and in particualr technology), there are some downsides to using the app. Of course each person needs to decide, on their own, whether the pros (in particular saving on gas) are worth the downsides.

One catch to the Upside App is that it has some limitations, such as a limited number of gas station partnerships and cashback limitations. The payment methods and frequency may also be a challenge for some people.

In addition, the main catch is the company also generates revenue through targeted advertising and partnerships with other companies. In other words, like many (almost all companies), a major catch to using Upside is ads you need to deal with, promos, and potentially your data being shared by those partners.

While Upside says their terms and conditions can change, the Upside collects data such as your name, social network profiles, email address, copy of receipts or uploads to the app, geo-location, your contact information and more. This may be the biggest downside to it, as while you do save money, they do need some of your personal data.

It's important to note that the Upside App has a privacy policy that outlines how they handle customer data. Before downloading and using the app, it is recommended to review it. However, according to the policy, Upside does not sell customer data to third parties.

Upside may use customer data to provide targeted advertising, but only if customers have consented to this. Additionally, Upside takes measures to protect customer data and uses encryption to secure customer information as well as the security of your linked debit and/or credit card.
