A few different types of skill training are available through the Tennessee career centers. They can be held as workshops or seminars. Some services may also be provided on an individualized basis.

  • The workshops can include topics such as how to create or enhance a résumé, develop interviewing skills, and how to best search for work and develop a network.
  • Adult Education classes can teach students and adults a number of things. They include topics such as math skills, writing, and increased reading comprehension. GED training and testing may be available too.

Educational programs are widely available across Tennessee. They can help adults who currently have basic skills develop new ones. General Educational Development, or GED exam preparation sessions are held in many offices and schools. Immigrants and others can also register into classes such as English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). This can help people that wish to write, assist them with learning to read, and speak the English language.

Tennessee Career Centers offer clients the use of workstations. They can include onsite computers with free Internet access, specialized resume software, use of printers and more. The unemployed and job seekers can use the Jobs4TN Online Web site to search for openings or create and post a résumé online. Workforce centers also offer coding classes and teach the general population how to get (or improve) high tech skills in todays work environment, and this is part of free internet access points. Work with a specialist to find data on job training opportunities and also in-demand occupations.

Many employers work with the centers to find highly qualified applicants. So staff from the Career Center can refer individuals to local Tennessee or national employers who have open positions for which you qualify. There will also be job fairs and other miscellaneous hiring events held over the course of a year.

Rapid job services for unemployed in Tennessee

A Dislocated Workers program is offered. This will administer workforce training through the partners that are part of the Tennessee Career Center system. A dislocated worker is generally defined as those who lost their jobs because of mass layoffs or permanent business closures due to the economic climate or as a result of even natural disasters. Skills assessment, employment-related testing, training information, referral, and general case management are among a few of the many services provided to those who were dislocated.

A key component of this is so called Rapid Response. A dedicated team works with employees in mass to inform them of the various employment assistance programs that the state and federal government offers.  Examples of these resources include Unemployment Insurance, labor market and in-demand occupation information, job search and placement assistance, assessment and testing, resume preparation and interviewing skills workshops, and occupational skills training and classroom sessions if deemed necessary.

Free counseling is also available to help the unemployed and so called Dislocated Workers with a variety of issues. They will help facilitate job search assistance and referrals. Also get general support in dealing with the stress of having lost your job through no fault of your own.

The centers are a great place for both businesses and employees to get local Labor Market Information. Access the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics to compile data on Tennessee that is valuable to employers and job seekers. Learn about up and coming careers and what skills may be most beneficial in the future.

Career Center Job Fairs are held across Tennessee. Clients can take part in these special-event fairs that are held several times throughout the year. Some focus specifically on specialized employment sectors and others are for more blue collar positions.

Free job and workforce programs for the elderly and veterans

Workforce Development also offers services for Veterans in Tennessee. Representatives from the Career Centers will team up with the various branches of the military to reach returning service members. They partner together to help people transition from military to civilian life.

Veterans are required by the government to receive priority in job training and employment referrals as well as other, related career counseling services. The sites also serve as central contacts for referral of veterans to other local non-profit agencies for additional services.

U.S. Military Veterans will be provided priority service and attention in all of the Career Centers. All veterans in the state (and there are about one half million) are eligible for job referral and also the training programs that are offered by agencies such as the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

The Tennessee Senior Community Service Employment Program is an option for low-income, unemployed individuals aged 55 years and older. The client needs to be actively seeking work and/or new skills and meet the income thresholds. They also help retirees make their savings last longer.

It is a federal government originated program and provides subsidized, part-time work experience to candidates. It will allow older adults in Tennessee the means to obtain the skills necessary for permanent employment. Those who enroll will hopefully gain new skills and talents, or enhance existing ones. The best part is that it is offered from hands on, valuable work experience and on the job training.

Many serves are offered as part of SCSEP. For example, the lead organization, the TN Department of Labor and Workforce Development, will provide an assessment. This will help determine an individual needs for training, supportive services, and also gauge their potential for employment.

If you are found to be eligible, clients will be placed into a position in community service with a local nonprofit, public, or private sector businesses. They will work approximately 20 hours per week at a lower wage. However the key is to get job-related training. This may consist of upgrading existing skills, job counseling, assist with developing new skills, limited educational opportunities, and more. Some of the job sites may be schools, hospitals, law offices, and more. The positions may include nurse's aides and teacher's aides, clerical workers, and library clerks.
