Tangipahoa and Livingston area Salvation Army assistance programs.

The Salvation Army of Tangipahoa and nearby parishes, such as Livingston and Washington, provide social services to the low income, elderly, and senior citizens in the region. Some limited, emergency financial aid may be paid out as well in certain situations.

The focus is on meeting the basic needs of the less fortunate and low income. When possible, the assistance programs provide free food, clothing, financial assistance to pay utilities, shelter, and referrals. Get information on the Salvation Army and their partner organizations in the Tangipahoa parish region.

Homeless prevention, housing, and rent services are available to qualified residents. Individuals can also use emergency shelters, group homes, and the Salvation Army transitional living centers. These different resources can help pay rent or provide housing on temporary basis in St. John the Baptist and Livingston parish. Resources can also serve the homeless by providing food, free meals and access to overnight lodging.

Any type of cash assistance for rental expenses is very limited. Normally only a partial payment will be made, and the applicant needs to be implementing a plan to gain self-sufficiency and resume payments on their own. It is also a program of so called last resort so it may be an option when people have no where else to turn to for help.

Those who use the housing resources can also access educational, job counseling and other vocational services. This is offered to the low income and homeless in Washington and Tangipahoa. Some services can be administered for extended periods of time as well.

The Salvation Army Family Service programs are more general. These can help families, the unemployed and senior citizens with emergency food, vouchers for clothing, housing, utility bill assistance and other temporary needs. The specific of each resource will vary with local needs and can change by parish.

Casework is a core component of many centers. This can include one on one sessions or workshops including financial planning, credit counseling and job placement. Counseling is offered for youth, the jobless, single parents and many others in Saint Helena and Livingston Louisiana. Case workers will advocate for you.

Christmas charity programs will try to ensure families experience the holidays. This is focused on children, homebound seniors, and those in say a nursing home. Donations to the Salvation Army are used to provide free Christmas dinners, gifts, clothing, and toys for children and families in need. Income conditions need to be met. Also, during the Christmas season, additional financial assistance may be distributed to help with basic necessities and the additional bills that can occur during the winter. All of this is considered seasonal aid. Even families of prisoners and those in a nursing home are considered for Christmas cheer.

Many volunteers work with the non-profit and local churches to distribute gifts to shut-ins in hospitals and nursing homes. Shelters in Tangipahoa parish are open for sit-down dinners. The Salvation Army, its staff and volunteers try to bring the real meaning of the season to the less fortunate.

Families can receive aid and support over a period of months after the Christmas holiday season as well. This is usually offered for those residents that are struggling with difficult family, emotional, medical, or employment problems.

The Salvation Army social service programs provide guidance and material support. They will help meet the basic needs of daily life for those without the resources or income to do so themselves. Often, the multitude of assistance programs provide free food, clothing, shelter, emergency financial assistance to pay rent or utilities, and much more.

Social services may also include education programs, counseling, and affordable health care. This is part of the free Salvation Army case work for clients. Some services are for emancipated minors, pregnant teens, and also wards of the juvenile court in Louisiana.
