Rental assistance in Tallahassee and Leon County Florida.

Rent, security deposit, and housing assistance is offered in Tallahassee and Leon County Florida. Low income, seniors, unemployed, and disabled residents have a number of financial resources they can apply for. Find churches, government or charity agencies that provide immediate or long term rental assistance, including section 8 housing or free motel vouchers. Find information on other programs that can help pay security deposits, moving costs, or offer free apartments or legal aid to stop evictions as well as grants for back rent.

The demand for housing assistance in the Tallahassee area is very high, and only a limited number of families will be able to receive funds to pay rent or deposits. Priority is usually given to families with children, the elderly, disabled and people who are facing a short term crisis. In addition to providing immediate relief and cash assistance, many of the Leon County Florida organizations will also provide case management, counseling, and advice so people or the disabled can become self-sufficient over the long term. Community Action Agency - Part of the nationwide community action agency program. Offers a number of financial assistance programs, including rent and utility assistance, deposits, and eviction prevention. Also get long term counseling for self-sufficiency.

Some additional resources of what they can offer includes (if funds are available) up to 14 days housing in a local hotel, and the organization may have funds available to assist with paying part of security deposit for apartment and rent.

ECHO Outreach Ministries - The non-profit has an emergency resources program that assists with  referrals to other programs and agencies, house wares, and ID assistance for clients that are homeless. Department of Children and Families (DCF) provides temporary cash aid from TANF and other benefits. The funds can be used as a form of housing and rental assistance program, with most of the aid for the very low income with families. Get help, including security deposit assistance as well as assistance with first month's rent. The state will issue cash grants for these expenses. Tallahassee Housing Authority - Runs the federal government Section 8 housing voucher program, which offers assistance with rent in the private rental market, according to the family's total household income. Big Bend Homeless Coalition supports all of Leon County. A focus is on helping veterans with their rent to avoid an eviction. Others may receive help, sometimes in the form of a loan for utilities or rental costs, on a case by case basis. The office is at 325 John Knox Road in Tallahassee, or dial (850) 597-5595.

Legal Services of Leon County provides free advice or representation to tenants facing an eviction. There are volunteer attorneys as well as full time lawyers. Leon County Florida Catholic Charities - Provides families and individuals with limited amounts of rent and mortgage assistance, furniture and other social services. Catholic Charities of Northwest Florida gives other support too Meet with staff to get information on assistance programs. Free vouchers for emergency family motel stays, rent assistance, eviction prevention advice, and more. Case management and referrals are provided too. Grants and support from Homeless Prevention and Rapid Rehousing are available in Leon County and the city. Emergency aid for rental arrears, legal aid, and utility bill help is combined with case management. Tenants, senior citizens, and immigrants can apply for grants for rent and more. Salvation Army - Call to see if funds are available for rent help and to make an appointment. When possible, a grant is used for housing expenses. Housing for Better Health only assists people with AIDs or HIV. Emergency rent or deposit help, funds for moving costs, transportation and other support is offered.
