Spartanburg and Union County Salvation Army assistance programs.

The Salvation Army operates programs across the greater Spartanburg County South Carolina region. They offer financial assistance for rent, mortgages or electric bills certain times of the week for those that can meet qualifications. Other resources include a family thrift store, case management, and referrals. Or get free food from a pantry as well as Christmas toys or school supply items. Everything they do is limited and funds may run out at any time. If the Salvation Army can’t help then referrals may be offered. Services are also for nearby Union County as well.

The financial assistance programs are in highest demand. The Spartanburg County Salvation Army offers funds for partial utilities, housing and emergency rental costs. Appointments are needed and all funds are limited. As part of the application process, be prepared for an interview, have proof of ID for you and household members, clients need copies of bills and their lease as well as other supporting documentation.

Most of the aid is for people with a utility disconnect notice or eviction letter. It will also prioritize income qualified families with young children, senior citizens, and/or the disabled. The main number in Spartanburg is 864.576.6670, and dial for information on an appointment.

Thrift stores are in the region. These allow people to shop and their purchases always help the Salvation Army help others. As the money raised goes to fund various resources.

At the Spartanburg Salvation Army Family Store, clients may find bargain prices and great deals. The locations may have gently used clothing, furniture, sporting equipment, household goods, books, Christmas toys, electronics and more.

Those with the lowest income or recovering from a disaster such as a fire may get free items or clothing. Usually a gift certificate or voucher will be issued to the person so they can shop at the thrift store. Anything that someone purchases from the stores directly funds the Salvation Army Spartanburg County Corps Community Center. The items are usually quality goods and are sold at reasonable prices.

Outreach and Social Services are available at the so called ministry. Case managers show people in Spartanburg and close by Union Counties that society and people really care about their well being. The Social Service resources clothe, feed, and financially assist low income families. The support is for those in need of help and they operate year round. Some of what can be offered is medications, rent help, free fuel, clothing, and of course general counseling. Call 864.576.6670 for services.

The young and children are always a focus of Salvation Army centers. Therefore some of the programs that focus on children from low income families are offered. This includes activities material support such as free back-to-school supplies. Holiday and Christmas gifts may be offered from the regional Angel Tree or somewhat similar Adopt a Family services in Spartanburg. Case managers don’t want children to struggle just because maybe their family is.

As noted, referrals are available. If someone doesn’t qualify for Salvation Army emergency aid mentioned above, then social workers can direct people to other options. This can include local pantries or non-profits. Or learn about and get help in applying for public aid such as LIHEAP or SNAP food stamps. So residents do have other choices available to them.

Help for the homeless or people facing eviction can include shelters or funds for a partial rent payment. In some cases people from Union County or South Carolina towns struggle due to unemployment or a crisis. So rather than see someone go homeless, the Salvation Army tries to take a pro-active approach. Case managers help clients work through their challenges and regain stability.
