Southeast Louisiana free Legal Services programs.

Access to legal advice, free consultations from lawyers and representation is available for low income families. Non-profit law firms, such as Southeast Louisiana Legal Services, work with low income residents and the disadvantaged in New Orleans, Jefferson Parish and nearby parishes to help them resolve civil matters. The attorneys and paralegals from the firms want everyone, regardless of their income, to have some form of legal representation when they need it. Many of the staff are volunteer or the lawyers are pro-bono. Most of the requests involve help for preventing evictions, advice or support on applying for entitlements such as SSI for section 8, and assistance for seniors or the disabled. However an extensive number of civil issues can be addressed by the firm. Clients with very low income, and seniors, will generally receive services for free.

Type of free legal aid in Southeast Louisiana

Consumer debt issues are always addressed. Many predatory or payday lenders operate in New Orleans and other part of Louisiana. Oftentimes they try to charge borrowers higher fees or rates or maybe they advise people to converting credit card debt into secured debt, which is a bad thing.

Southeast Louisiana Legal Services will help low-income individuals avoid this. They will use non-profit credit counseling agencies as well if needed. They will offer free legal support to stop debt collectors, work with homeowners or sub-prime loans, fix credit scores, and offer other aid in Jefferson and Orleans parish. Either lawyers or their advocates will represent people in seeking bankruptcy or resolve disputes over debt collection. They will also help people cancel unfair sales or loans taken out, or arrange re-payment plan with your creditors. If an attorney can’t help, they may refer a client to a local New Orleans based non-profit credit counselor.

Free eviction and foreclosure prevention defense

Receive legal assistance for housing matters. Staff will both represent and educate people in disputes with a housing authority, landlord or a bank. One key service is free legal aid to stop evictions from occurring, and resolving other landlord disputes. They can also help low income or elderly tenants improve their living conditions.

 

 

 

Protecting and ending homelessness is always a focus of any attorney in Louisiana, including both New Orleans and Jefferson County. Work with an advocate to dispute rent and deposit claims with your landlord. Or learn how public aid, such as Social Security, TANF cash assistance, or SSI can help pay for housing costs. Many clinics are in the city and area.

Lawyers to help apply for government assistance

Applying for Public Aid and Government Benefits is a free legal service that is available. Many lower income people, including the disabled, unemployed or seniors, need free advice and support on obtaining Social Security disability child care assistance; welfare or FITAP; or LIHEAP. Even after they have been enrolled, in some cases the government will reduce their benefits. Legal aid can help people both get the assistance they are entitled too and ensure they keep it.

Attorneys will help people get all benefits they are due and ensure they are not discriminated against. They also advocate on behalf of the poor and less fortunate in New Orleans and really across Louisiana.

Receive representation for Employment and Job-related Problems. Advocates and paralegals will help the terminated obtain unemployment benefits, ensure they are paid fairly (such as minimum wage or overtime) and address similar workplace matters.

Staff from Southeast Louisiana Legal Services will also ensure people from Orleans get the correct unemployment compensation they need after being fired or after having to quit. Then, when seeking new employment in Louisiana, receive assistance in obtaining and licenses needed to work. Discrimination, retaliation, and a variety of other workplace concerns may also qualify for free legal support.

Additional free programs for civil issues in SE Louisiana

Assistance is available for victims of domestic violence. There is support for children as well as women or even others who need help to preserve their family connections. The staff will enforce all court-ordered regulations. In addition to that, full support is always offered in an effort to protect clients from additional abuse, violence and neglect. Tax assistance is arranged by firms such as the Common Ground Relief Legal Clinic and SLS. They also partner with other groups such as the National Technology Assistance Project. What is offered will vary, but it can include help with filing a return, representation is a dispute with the IRS, and ensuring tax payers get all the credits they deserve, such as for children. Southeast Louisiana Legal Services helps with both federal government and state of Louisiana tax matters.
