Salvation Army programs in Solano County.

The primary Salvation Army resource for residents of Solano County California is known as Family Services. Case managers and others try to strengthen and unify the family, regardless of their background, religion, or economic status.

A number of assistance programs are offered, including financial help for paying bills, casework services and counseling. The Salvation Army offers support for child-parent relationships, unemployment issues, single parents, unmarried mother's situations, and much more. Some of the other social services include Christmas assistance, rent help, seasonal support, referrals to government assistance and more.

Assistance for utilities is offered from the Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) REACH program. While a number of qualifications need to be met, a few hundred dollars can be paid out. Applicants need to have a disconnect notice with their hardship documented, and the information must be no longer than 60 days old. They will also need proof of monthly income and identification of household members. Also Section 8 recipients will only receive assistance with their energy bills if they have an elderly or disabled member in the home or apartment.

Energy bill help from Sacramento Municipal Utility District SMUD is also offered for electric bills. Grants cannot be used towards paying reconnection or deposit fees. Applicants need to also have a notice of termination of service or medical rate disconnect letter.

Food boxes are distributed a few days per week, with special Thanksgiving and Christmas meals offered. Residents can only take advantage of the Salvation Army pantry and food boxes at most 6 times per year, and there needs to be a minimum 30-day waiting period between boxes. Contents are non-perishable items; however the centers may have suggestions on where to go for other food items such as fresh fruits or vegetables. It is a walk in service, and the number of food boxes received varies with number of people in the family’s household. Be sure to bring I.D., proof of income required, and a Social Security card.

Programs for women and new mothers include maternity homes to shelter unwed mothers. Other services include outpatient care, aftercare for the young mother, and counseling. Case workers can also work with young mothers in order to assist them with finding a productive place in society. Some regional Salvation Army centers provide vocational guidance, group therapy, GED training, special high school classes and even free or low cost daycare while parents work.

 

 

 

Social services - Other resources and facilities available to the needy include emergency shelters, medical and counseling services for women suffering from substance abuse, children's homes, and housing for pre-delinquent adolescent girls. Daycare centers throughout Solano County maintain high standards of service, offering teenagers, infants, and children free wholesome food and meals as well as other care. Family and social services in the Vallejo California area endeavor to strengthen and unify the family unit.

Rental assistance for both eviction avoidance and move in costs may be offered in Solano County from the Salvation Army. Qualified applicants may receive some limited funds, around $200 to $600 for their rent. Aid is only offered for people with an eviction notice and who can prove it. Assistance also requires proof of hardship and supporting documentation.

Get help with your City of Sacramento Water, Sewer & Garbage costs. You must be a City of Sacramento or Solano homeowner and/or show proof that you are responsible for paying these costs.

Disaster assistance is offered for victims of a man made or natural event. The Salvation Army may have emergency food, clothing and other incidental items. In general, up to $100 in assistance or items can be distributed per family, and this will often be paid out in the form of a voucher. Applicants also must have pre-registered with Red Cross/FEMA first. Vallejo residents can get emergency lodging/shelter in the region, as well as vouchers for motel assistance up to 3 nights.

Transportation assistance provided can include Bus Tickets & free gasoline vouchers. These are usually only offered for emergency appointments, such as a job interview or doctor appointment.

A focus of the Salvation Army is on Holiday Assistance. The Solano County center has several different assistance programs to those lower income families and their children. Seniors may also benefit. The aid is for mostly the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday periods. Some of what may be offered includes free meal boxes and toys for children. Usually hundreds of families and children benefit every year from the Christmas assistance programs.

Angel Tree is another key Christmas program. Every holiday the Angel Tree is placed at local mall, post offices, supermarkets, restaurants, businesses or fitness centers in Vallejo or somewhere in the county. Each location will be set up with little angel tags, which will really have the wishes of a child on it. Family’s need to register with the Salvation Army first, and it relies on donations and contributions from the community.

 

 

 

 

Adopt-a-Family is a Solano County program that allows families the ability to create a wish list of needed items, and they will then be matched with a volunteer donor team. People can request items such as food, clothing and household items. Then what will happen is local Vallejo and Solano County businesses, Service Clubs, families, Churches, and school groups adopt the families and try to get the items they have requested.
