Section 8 programs in Hawaii.

Vouchers for paying your rent can be obtained from the section 8 housing program in Hawaii. Qualified low income families and individuals can apply for subsidies on their housing expenses, including utilizes and rent. These are issued as vouchers, and are paid directly to landlords on your behalf. Most of the applications tend to come from elderly, disabled or handicapped individuals. While there is a waiting list, the program will do whatever it can to assist the less fortunate.

The section 8 program allows clients to seek their own housing. Qualified families will receive a Housing Choice Voucher which entitles them to search for a safe and reasonably priced rental unit or apartment of their choosing in Hawaii. The home needs to be decent, safe, and sanitary, and also fall within other program guidelines. Program participants will need to pay only approximately 30% of their total gross household income towards their rent. The state of Hawaii and the federal government subsidizes the difference between the household’s payment and the rental amount.

The HUD program is also usually offered at the same time as the Family Self-Sufficiency Program. The FSS Program is another resource that can help Section 8 qualified families transition from receiving government subsidies to financial independence. Hopefully people can become self-reliant and free of government subsidies and rent assistance over the mid to long term. The Hawaii Public Housing Authority (HPHA) as well as the City and State of Hawaii provide this FSS program to Section 8 families. It can really help people by enhancing their employability skills that will help them get a job, receive benefits (such as insurance) and attain self-sufficiency over the long term.

The tenant does have obligations that they need to fulfilled in order to continue to receive housing assistance from HUD and the federal government. Clients need to remain income-eligible and abide by rules and regulations in place. For example only authorized persons are allowed to live in the housing unit or apartment. The tenant also needs to follow all lease terms and conditions that are in place with their landlord.
