Schoharie County Community Action assistance programs.

The main programs from the Schoharie County Community Action include emergency rent and shelter, weatherization, and some job placement resources. The non-profit agency and its case managers are committed to working with the poor and the less fortunate to help them overcome their challenges.

The local Emergency Shelter program helps the homeless and those that are struggling with paying their rent. The program assists families or individuals who do not have any shelter available to them and are not eligible for receiving assistance at the local New York Department of Social Services office.

Another housing resource is the Rental Assistance program. This is run by the Schoharie County Community Action Agency and its helps families or individuals who cannot pay their rent on time. They also can't be qualified for receiving assistance at a local charity organization or the local Department of Social Services. So any aid is only offered to those residents that are out of options. Clients are offered with rent for first month. If qualified, it can also help with a back months payment and the amount paid for rent is based on their needs, income, and other factors.

Heating and energy bill help is for people who are unable to pay their utility bills on time. It is available for a number of reasons such as reduction in income, loss of job, medical condition etc. Qualified Schoharie families are provided with this assistance. The employees of the agency will help families in communicating with service provider to determine options that are available to them.

Weatherization assists homeowners with saving money. Low-income households can get help in becoming more energy efficient and reducing their energy bills. This is achieved by installing cost effective and energy efficient improvements. The non-profit community action agency will do this for free, using government funds, while ensuring the health and safety of people served in the home.

Grants for utility bills from the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance (LIHEAP) can help the poor and struggling as well. Schoharie County Community Action offers eligible customers with energy and heating bill assistance grants. Customers using natural gas, heating oil or other sources need to call their heating vendor for making payment arrangements before getting an appointment with our Energy Assistance team.

Job placement from the NYS Displaced Homemaker Program is for residents that are unemployed or underemployed. They also need to be having difficulty getting a job on their own or moving ahead. The applicant may have also even worked in the labor force for a substantial number of years but, during that time, has worked in their own home providing assistance for family members. The Homemaker Program is also for people who depend on public assistance, government benefits or on the income of another family member.

A number of services are provided by this program. Schoharie County Community Action helps people attain economic independence by offering them with free career counseling, resume review services, employment training, job search assistance, and any other support services they need to obtain employment. Helping people from the region get employed and become self-supporting are the main goals of this employment program.

It provides those that qualify with a wide range of career readiness workshops. Counselors will work with customers and offer interviewing skills, resume advice and cover letter preparation, tips on how to perform Online job searching techniques, training on  Basic computer skills trainings in Microsoft Word, Excel and Access, and various other job development tactics.

The community action agency can help in other ways as well, mostly from referrals. The main center is at 795 East Main Street, Suite 5, Cobleskill, New York 12043-1436. Call (518) 234-2568.
