Catholic Charities emergency help in Savannah.

The programs from Catholic Charity churches in the Savannah region are limited. Applicants, who come from a variety of backgrounds, often contact the charity for both emergency assistance and long term support. Staff from Catholic Charities social services will try to contact applicants with resources in the community. Or in some cases, they will provide their own forms of assistance.

Support is provided to those families facing a hardship as the result of an economic hardship that they did not create. Not only may short term help be given, such as a free box of food from the pantry, but they will also direct people to programs that can help them obtain a livable wage.

Emergency help from Catholic Charities in Chatham County

There are a few types of emergency assistance available from Catholic Charities. This is provided only to qualified low income families, without discrimination to age, race or religion. Clients can be immigrants or the disabled in Savannah and Chatham County, and many others are given referrals.

  • Homeless assistance – This will include placement into shelters or a voucher given to pay for a motel.
  • Eviction prevention – Clients can be referred to government grant programs for paying past due rent.
  • Landlord mediation – Staff from Catholic Charities work with the tenant and landlord to find a solution.
  • Utility help – Emergency funds for bills ranging from heating to electric or water.

Participants to any one of these programs will also be able to access case management. This is provided by Catholic Charities in partnership with groups such as credit counselors in the region of Chatham County. This is done in an effort to help stabilize the clients situation.

Savannah GA Catholic Charity addresses the issue of hunger in the Savannah area through the services available at the Food Bank. The center, based on an intake process, provides emergency, nutritious and supplemental food to low-income individuals and families in the Chatham County area. The pantry is open a few days per week.

 

 

 

This form of assistance is only for short term needs though. It can't be relied upon over the course of weeks or months. So to tackle long term poverty in the region, the staff at the Catholic Charities Food Bank also assists clients in securing Georgia SNAP food stamps. They also provide nutrition education as well as budgeting classes, which will help families stretch their dollars.

Public assistance and case management in Savannah area

When funds are not available, which is common, all hope should not be lost. This is when an applicant can be redirected to anyone of dozens of federal or state of Georgia grant programs. To address this, the Chatham County Catholic Charities offers comprehensive advocacy with partners in the Savannah region. There is information and referrals for community members seeking emergency services such as substance abuse recovery, sexual assault/abuse support, affordable child or medical care, and other emergency needs. So the intent is to do what it takes to break a cycle of poverty.

Catholic Charities staff work to provide employment and life skills training. This may lead to increased wages. This can be met by the agency improving job readiness and employability of clients. Workshops as well as individual counseling are used for this.
