A number of low income housing, eviction prevention, legal defense programs and rental assistance grants are available for low-income families.

There is financial help in the form of loans as well as grants. Many non-profit organizations, charities, and government resources can be applied to for rent help in Providence. Emergency rental assistance, as well as section 8 HUD vouchers, is offered for families, seniors, the disabled and even single mothers in Providence. Community Action Agencies are all across Providence. Many of them go by the abbreviation of CAP. These are multi-facted non-profits that offer grants, housing or rent resources, utility bill assistance and more.

  • Tri-County Community Action Agency offers a number of assistance programs. One is homeless prevention, which can including emergency rent assistance, security deposit or moving help. There are also job programs, budgeting, and home buying advice. The community action agency has multiple sites in the region, and referrals or applications are given to help with back rent payments.   • East Bay Community Action Program (CAP) address is 100 Bullocks Point Avenue, Riverside, RI 02915. People at risk of eviction can be help from Homelessness Prevention. The community action agency offers help to stop evictions, emergency funds for rent, and support in East Providence, Barrington, Warren, and Bristol. Call (401) 437-1000.
     
  • Comprehensive Community Action Program is based at 311 Doric Avenue, Cranston, RI 02910. for information on financial resources, housing programs, case management and more dial (401) 467-9610. They assist Cranston, Coventry, Foster, and Scituate.
     
  • Blackstone Valley CAP is at 32 Goff Avenue, Pawtucket, RI 02860. Apply for Homelessness Prevention and assistance for those at risk of eviction.. Telephone number - (401) 723-4520. The agency supports Pawtucket and Central Falls.
     
  • South County Community Action is another CAP agency. Grants, loans for rent, security deposit or lease application fee help and more is offered at 1935 Kingstown Rd, Wakefield, RI 02879. Call (401) 789-3016. Long term self-sufficiency is a goal.

 

 

 

Interfaith Community Dire Emergency Fund – Rental assistance may be offered when funding allows. However a host of help for other expenses can be applied for too. Section 8 housing vouchers and rent subsidized homes (apartments, town homes, condos, etc.) are available. Section 8 normally has a waiting list and tenants need to pay up to 30% of their income for the housing. A few different agencies run it. They also offer Family Self-Sufficiency, emergency vouchers, information on home buying and much more.

  • Providence Housing Authority (PHA) is focused on the city. The address is 100 Broad St, Providence, RI 02903. Dial (401) 751-6400

Another option is the statewide Rhode Island Housing. This government office runs the Housing Choice Voucher Program and Federal Government Section 8 Subsidized Apartment Rental Assistance. A major focus is on families in or near poverty.

The main office in central Providence. There are also locations in other parts of town. Applications to HUD section 8 housing choice vouchers for helping with rent. They also help seniors and the disabled access affordable housing, offer home buying programs, grants, and other rental or housing resources. South Providence Neighborhood Ministries – Household goods, furniture, and other items offered. Some rental and housing assistance be applied for. They are also a great place for referrals to local charities and non-profits, as well as Rhode Island as well as federal government assistance programs. Providence Community Action Program (PROCAP) – They partner with community centers and social service programs in Rhode Island as well as Providence. The financial help given for paying rent, including loans, is limited. The focus is on low income families with children, including single parents and individuals. NeighborWorks Blackstone River Valley helps low income families find, and pay for, a home or apartment. There are landlord and tenants service, repairs and other support from 719 Front Street, Woonsocket, RI 02895. Dial (401) 762-0993

RI Legal Services is located at 56 Pine St 4th floor, Providence, RI 02903. The pro-bono law firm can provide free legal aid to tenants facing eviction or that are living in unsafe housing in Providence County. The lawyers fight evictions, represent poor and low income renters in housing court and give other support. Phone number - (401) 274-2652.

Community Care Alliance mostly focuses on single moms, substance abusers, the less fortunate and disabled. There may be rent help, financial counseling, transitional housing programs and other social services. The goal is to help clients find, and pay for housing, as well as maintain it. Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (SVDP) has many parishes around Providence RI. Whether financial aid for back rent, a security deposit or partial mortgage payment, or poverty fighting resources, SVDP assists. They help the homeless, poor, low income and others from 25 Webb Street, Cranston, RI 02920. Call (401) 490-0822.

Salvation Army, Providence Corps - Housing services in the county range from shelter to referrals to transitional housing. There may be emergency accommodations (such as free motel vouchers) along with partial rental payment help. Case managers may have referrals to agencies that seniors can contact for emergency rent help. Address is 386 Broad Street, dial (401) 831-1119.

ACCESS-RI is for people with mental health issues only. The address is 286 East Ave, Pawtucket, RI 02860. Case mangers can direct low income families to housing resources, medical care, and substance abuse - transitional homes. Phone number - 401-726-2422 .

 

 

 

 

Family Service RI is at (401) 331-1350. Low income and senior citizens in Providence can call upon this organization. Government grant money, legal aid, information on safe or affordable housing, moving help and more is offered from 55 Hope St, Providence, RI 02906.

Childrens Friend (McAuley Village Child Care Center) – This center runs a transitional rental assistance program as well as shelter that are located in the Elmwood section of Providence. The program was originally created to assist low income single parent families in their efforts to become economically independent over long term, and access housing over short term. 152 Summer St, Providence, Rhode Island 02903, telephone (401) 467-3630.

Federal government grant programs, such as ESG, help low income tenants and those facing eviction. The non-profits that offer the services may help with rental arrears, provide free motel vouchers to the homeless, pay utility costs that may lead to homelessness, and lease application fees. Lucy's Hearth  - Emergency rent help offered as part of Homelessness Prevention (which is for tenants at risk of eviction) & Rapid Rehousing (currently homeless residents). There may be funds to pay for moving costs, back rent, utility connection fee, a security deposit or other housing related bills. Telephone number of facility is - (401) 847-2021. McAuley House - Rent help, including Homelessness Prevention is offered to families at risk of eviction in Providence. Another program, Rapid Rehousing, is available to those currently homeless and can help with security deposits or first months rent. Main phone - 401-941-9013. Project Hope advocates for the community. They focus on housing, rent, and basic needs from the center at 474 Broadway, Pawtucket, RI 02860. All services are offered in Spanish too. Operation Stand Down RI helps veterans. There are applications to the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) Program. Homeless vets can get into housing first programs. There is grant money, employment, transitional housing and other support. Dial (401) 383-4730.

Catholic Charities of Providence Rhode Island has a number of assistance programs. They help immigrants (including with housing or employment needs). From time to time a few dollars to help with rent or utility bills (to stop a disconnection or eviction) or other financial aid is offered. Call (401) 278-4500.
