Get financial assistance from the Salvation Army in the Phoenix region

The Phoenix Salvation Army Emergency Assistance Program can help people who are faced with a short term financial hardship or crisis. Stabilization, case management, and other social services are administered. For example, individuals who have lost their jobs may get help with transportation. Or maybe someone is waiting for their unemployment or government assistance to start up, so they need some help during that timeframe.

People are often faced with the choice of paying for their medicine, food, housing or rent. So the Salvation Army seeks to alleviate the financial struggles of families and individuals who have experienced a crisis within the last 30 days. Financial assistance is given on a first-come, first-served basis, and is limited. Some of what can be paid for includes one month of utilities or rent. Or they also pass out free groceries from the food bank or give free gasoline vouchers for work or an interview. Students from all backgrounds can be given the free back to school supplies they need from EA as well.

Also, the Emergency Assistance Program can help keep a family fed. The program offers food boxes and groceries to those in need. The main resources offered are USDA food boxes. These will tend to be made available to anyone who needs help, including seniors and low income families. The box of groceries from the Phoenix Salvation Army food pantry will usually have one or two days worth of groceries or meals. If you meet certain income levels that additional Salvation Army food boxes are provided for those who qualify for aid. Most of the food boxes are packed monthly by volunteers and others in the community.

Short term needs are addressed by the Emergency Assistance Program. It has a goal of offering temporary stability while individuals and families work to deal with longer term challenges. Salvation Army clients can focus on finding a job, increasing their income, gaining a new skill, and otherwise adjusting their lifestyle to their current means with the assurance of shelter, housing and food. This is available for Spanish speakers, Mexicans, and some immigrants in the Phoenix area as well. A main objective is to prevent homelessness in the greater Phoenix community.

Cooling Assistance and Emergency Disaster Heat Emergency Response are used from time to time during the hot Arizona summer. In total, up to eleven hydration stations are open across the Phoenix metropolitan area. The stations can help people get out of the heat, especially seniors and children. They can distribute free bottled water to anyone who needs it. Also, when available, hats and sunscreen are provided to those needing protection from the sun. A key is to help people who are most at risk stay cool during the summer.

The EDS program works alongside the Salvation Army Project HOPE program, and it provides information on the nearest heat respite location or shelter, which is available to provide individuals with temporary relief and escape from the daytime heat. Transportation assistance to the hydration stations and shelters may also be provided.

The homeless can receive support from Project HOPE (Homeless Outreach to Place and Empower). This program works to provide homeless families and individuals the services and support they need to both find a short term housing unit, and more importantly establish permanent homes or apartments and self-sufficiency. Homeless individuals will be offered free transportation to Project HOPE, shelters, or the homes that are part of this program.

Case managers from Project HOPE will give the client an assessment of their situation. They will then work one-on-one with the client to help them get established. A job development specialist from the Salvation Army works with the client to help them find employment or gain a new skill, which may also include career preparation and resume advisement, among other services. A housing coordinator will also be assigned to the individual, and they will help the individual find stable housing in a motel, apartment, shelter, or with a family member.

In addition to those services, Project HOPE will offer individuals other basic needs and essentials like bus tickets, food, bedding, interview and work clothing, and furniture. Receive assistance with obtaining proper identification and completing paperwork. Case managers can also refer individuals with specific needs to other community agencies across Phoenix Arizona.

Referrals for housing needs are given from the Maricopa County Salvation Army Project HOPE program. The case manager will offer linkage to financial support, including for deposits and/or first months rent. Another common need of the working poor and immigrants is money for moving cost assistance, and people can turn to non-profit help for paying security deposits.

Salvation Army Family Stores are located across Phoenix. They sell items to the public. Or give vouchers and gift cards for free goods. They have everything from furniture, beds, kitchen tables to school supplies, computers, and toys for kids for their birthday or Christmas. Much of what they offer is low cost, with some free stuff given on occasion.

Salvation Army Maricopa County senior programs

Senior Activity Centers are available to all elderly and senior citizens, however the main beneficiaries are people with limited incomes or seniors who are living alone. The Phoenix Salvation Army's Laura Danieli Senior Activity Center will help seniors maintain their quality of life and assist with living independently. The address is 613 North 4th Avenue in downtown Phoenix Arizona, and is open to senior citizens 62-years of age or older.

Programs offered by the senior centers include free or low cost meals to homebound seniors, congregate meals daily, discounted bus tickets, and arts, exercise and crafts classes. The center will also run the Senior Transportation Outreach program. This will assist the elderly and senior citizens with transportation to doctor and medical appointments, help people obtaining prescription medications, provide rides to grocery stores, and other basic or high priority transportation needs.

Other services offered to qualified senior citizens in Phoenix include free legal assistance, medical referrals, and exercise classes, arts and crafts sessions. Other support is given to low income elderly residents as well.

The Senior Asian Outreach service is offered for elderly, Asian individuals who live in Maricopa County. The program is offered at The Salvation Army's Phoenix Korean Corps. Resources offered include classes for strengthening their English skills, arts and crafts, and legal advice. Also get transportation to participate in socialization opportunities. Dial 623-934-5950.

Senior Transportation Outreach - Many senior citizens in the region need may have physical and/or financial limitations. So the Salvation Army's Laura Danieli Senior Activity Center partnered with the City of Phoenix to create a transportation service from their various centers.

The transportation program utilizes the Phoenix Metro Transit as well as handicapped-accessible vehicles to help seniors meet their needs. Transportation can be provided to help people get to the store or bank, doctor appointments, or even a ride to a senior center. In addition, the volunteers and drivers for this program will observe the conditions of the senior and their living conditions. They will communicate these observations to the Salvation Army case managers so that any client needs can be better resolved.
