Rental assistance in Penobscot County.

Several charities in Penobscot County provide rent help, grants to pay security deposits or utilities, as well as other short term housing programs. In addition, each town in Penobscot County has a General Assistance program. This is in effect government funds for helping with rental expenses and can be used as a last resort. The vouchers, including section 8, or funds can help with income based houses or apartments too. Get grant money for shelter costs, back rent, heating, moving, storage, or other bills.

The number of long term or emergency rental assistance programs in the Bangor area are limited. Qualified tenants may be given grants or loans. But there are some places to apply at below. Or of course try your local town GA office for a grant. In either case, homeless prevention, rent or utility assistance, and other housing resources are offered.

General Assistance from Penobscot County municipalities. The towns in the region have temporary financial assistance as part of GA. The government has grants for rent, fuel bills, furniture, and basic services. The town helps stop homelessness, utility disconnections and assists seniors, the poor, and vulnerable with rental, mortgage payments, and other costs. The towns may also have free motel vouchers for lodging.

Section 8 HCV vouchers are well as low income apartments are available in Penobscot County. The rent subsidized homes or apartments are combined with self-sufficiency, computer labs and job programs are all offered. Section 8 application and waiting lists are at Bangor Housing Authority (161 Davis Rd, Bangor, Maine 04401 (dial (207) 942-6365) and Brewer Housing Authority (15 Colonial Cir #1, Brewer, ME 04412, (207) 989-7551).

217-6740 helps the disabled, including mentally, with housing. Shelter Care Plus can help with security or utility deposits, rent, utility deposits and more. Two local churches may provide financial help. It will be small dollars of money (when funds are even offered) for rent, security deposits, moving, or other bills. St. Paul the Apostle Parish (phone 207-217-6740 address is 217 York Street in Bangor) as well as Community Evangel Temple (124 River Road Lincoln at 794-6181) are two options.

Three homeless shelters are the Bangor Homeless Shelter at 263 Main St, Bangor, Maine 04401 (dial (207) 947-0092); Hope House Health and Living Center at 179 Corporate Dr, Bangor, ME 04401, (207) 217-6713; and Shaw House at 136 Union St, Bangor, Maine 04401. Call (207) 941-2874.

The Salvation Army Corps provides many services in the city of Bangor as well as county. The address is Bangor, ME  04402-1101. There is Direct Assistance, which may be fuel bill help, food, and emergency rent assistance to stop evictions. Free legal and eviction defense help is at Pine Tree Legal Assistance, Inc.. Lawyers partner with tenants, homeowners, and the low income. The office is at 6374, 115 Main St # 2, Bangor, ME 04401. Phone: (207) 942-8241. They try to stop evictions, help seniors applying for benefits, and get rent or SSI applications to the disabled as well.
