Rent assistance in Oklahoma.

Rental assistance programs are available in Oklahoma from charities, non-profits and government programs. The goal is to help low-income families pay for housing costs to avoid homelessness. There is help available for paying back rent, security or moving deposits, certain utility bills or lot rent too. All funds are limited, with a focus on single moms, seniors and the disabled. There are both local programs (by city and county below) as well as statewide resources. Each county has organizations and places that offer help paying rent to qualified low-income tenants, and those can often be done fairy quickly – immediately. Or there is security deposit help, free tenant lawyers or multiple vouchers from a charity.

There are also Oklahoma Human Services grant programs and other government aid for housing. This will be focused on homeless prevention and/or rehousing of the homeless.

There are county and city programs listed below for emergency help with rent or hardship funds. In addition, several statewide resources are available, whether from the government or larger non-profits. Those housing programs include the following.

  • Eviction Prevention Programs for tenants. Local charities, county government offices and non-profits such as the United Way partner together to help renters pay their bills, whether back rent, electric costs, storage fees or something else.   • Salvation Army Emergency Services are often a last resort. While funding is limited, there may be money for low-income families or tenants with no money.   • Section 8 HUD housing in OK is for very low-income families, veterans, and people living in or near poverty levels. Local housing authorities (HA) in OK run the income based housing program. There are private landlords that rent our apartments or homes, emergency section 8 from HUD and other resources.   • Private low or no credit apartments are available in partnership with the state and many local property owners.   • Housing programs for Youth – A couple regional non-profits help youth find housing, pay the rent, and build self-sufficiency. This includes programs for formerly foster kids, expectant girls or teens, and youth who need a safe place to live after facing DV.
