Homeless prevention and rapid rehousing assistance in Nueces County.

One of the main housing assistance programs in the community is known as the Nueces County homeless prevention and rapid rehousing. It focuses on stopping everything from evictions to foreclosures to helping a now homeless person find a new, safe as well as affordable place to live in Corpus Christi or somewhere in Nueces County.

As part of this service, an assessment is done by one of many profit organizations in the region. Based on this result, everything from cash grants to legal aid, financial assistance for rental or mortgage arrears, to shelter, etc. is offered. Each applicant will be given specific support based on their housing situation.

Process for prevention and rehousing

Applicants, whether they families and individuals struggling financially or the homeless, they will work with a case manager from one of the non-profit agencies. The agency, as well as its staff members, will go through an assessment process as part of the Nueces County homeless prevention and rapid rehousing assistance program.

This assessment process that is completed will evaluate the client's barriers to housing, or maintaining their current accommodations. Based on all of the data (debt, monthly rent and mortgage payments, savings, employment, etc.) a local Nueces County agency provides an outline for an individualized housing services plan. An application as part of the homeless prevention and rapid rehousing program will be required. This is used for the verification process.

Assistance is available in Nueces County

After an assessment process has been completed (as noted above), if the client is found qualified then they will be assisted. The support comes in many forms. This too will be individualized based on the client’s circumstances, whether they rent or own a home. Or it is also available for the homeless.

Some federal government benefit programs, as well as charities, also focus on certain situations. Such as HUD SSVF for assisting veterans; Catholic Charities which can support single mothers or those fleeing from domestic violence; Shelter Plus Care for the mentally or physically disabled; and many others. In addition, and assistance from rapid rehousing as well as eviction/mortgage prevention depends on available funding; once the money is used up no other applications can be accepted.

The support provided based on all these factors may be as follows. As noted, each situation is handled based on client’s needs.

Grant and loans – Funds from Emergency Solution Grants (ESG) as well as charities can be used as a form of financial help. Money can assist with costs including security deposits; back rent; lease application fees; mortgage arrears; late fees; electric bills; reconnection fees; and other situations are assessed. Even find such resources as loans to help with rent.

Short term and permanent housing placement - Rapid rehousing in Nueces County covers this. The homeless may be moved into transitional housing. Other needs addressed during this process will be around employment; budgeting; debt reduction; and financial literacy.

Case management - Nueces County homeless prevention and rehousing always includes this. Among other things, the process from a non-profit includes the development of short and long-term goals, information on workforce training and employment needs in Corpus Christi, budgeting and more.
