Assistance programs in northern and western Kansas.

Get financial help for utility bills or housing, grant money and more in western and northern KS. Find help with electric bills or rent, free food, as well as church and charity programs in the counties of Sherman, Ellis, Ford, Seward and others. Get assistance in your community in NW Kansas.

The goal is to help low-income families, seniors and disabled people among others. There are emergency funds from charities, the government, churches and other groups, all focused on various issues. Whether money to help pay bills, free food, medical or dental assistance is offered.

Regional community action grant programs to help with bills

Harvest America Corporation is the local community action agency for the entire region. They offer the low income, working poor and people who are struggling a number of programs. A summary of some of the key financial resources are below. Call them for more information or to learn about other options.

  • Receive help with energy bills from LIEAP. This is a federal government funded assistance program that can assist families with paying for utility costs and heating bills. Grant money is offered in counties such as Barton, Wichita, Finney, and Ellis to pay utility bills, with a focus on senior citizens. More on LIEAP applications in Kansas.
  • Some free weatherization/energy conservation services can be applied for as well. You will need to prove your hardship and bring documentation, including proof of income for all adults in the home and details on every household member, such as age and social security numbers.
  • Referrals and information from the state of Kansas Benefit Bank. The state funded and supported Benefit Bank is a centralized location where all Kansas residents, no matter which town or county they live in. Struggling families or single people can apply for available government benefits and services.   • Foreclosure counseling and mortgage relief is available for local homeowners who need delinquency counseling or who are faced with a mortgage default. Highly trained homeownership counselors will meet with borrowers, review their case and answer questions that homeowners have. Representatives from Harvest America Corporation will contact your lenders or banks and negotiate some form of mortgage assistance on your behalf.

 

 

 

They will work with the lenders in an attempt to obtain agreements to avoid the loss of your home, including options such executing forbearance agreements, refinancing or entering into payment plans. Financial help for electric bills, rent, and housing costs

The West Region of Kansas is supported by SRS-Social & Rehabilitation Services. A number of employment services and job training programs are offered to help adults, teens, and the unemployed. Case workers help people get a job and access temporary cash assistance. There are also free clothes for work, supplies, and gas vouchers for an interview too. Central Kansas Dream Center Inc. runs a program known as Hungry Heart Soup Kitchen. This is minister service to help people in need. Resources include clothing, free groceries, or a hot meal. There is also help with housing, rent, budgeting classes, and other needs. A secondary activity service is available, including training such as life skills, job training, budgeting and managing finances. Location is 2100 Broadway Ave, Great Bend, KS 67530. Salvation Army of Barton County runs a number of social services. The charity offers free vouchers for RX or gasoline. There is also a low cost youth camp, free clothing and backpacks for school children who qualify.   • Another site, the Ellis County Salvation Army, is at 203 E 7th St, Hays, KS 67601. There are free Christmas toys for kids from Angel Tree as well as a homeless shelter. DCF-KS Department for Children & Families -West Region offers a number of social services and basic needs to families in Barton County and other areas. The government organization is focused on promoting healthy families in western Kansas. Some of the applications to government benefits offered includes applications for resources such as food stamps, TANF, low income energy assistance and more. Employment solutions are available too. Housing Authorities provides low-income families, single moms and those in poverty with income based housing. Applications are offered to HUD section 8 vouchers to help pay rent. There is also Family Self-Sufficiency, information on emergency section 8 for a crisis and other programs.

  • Great Bend Housing Authority runs the section 8 Program for low-income people. They provide low income and public housing, including to seniors, the disabled, and others. Location is 1101 Kansas Ave., Great Bend, Kansas, 67530. Call (620) 793-7761 for intake.

Financial help in northern and western KSEmmaus House offers a Soup Kitchen, Homeless/Emergency Shelter, and Food Pantry. Western Catholic Charities can support low income families of any religion and age. A partnership of churches and religious groups have partnered together in an effort to help the less fortunate, working poor and immigrants. A wide variety of assistance programs are offered.

  • They range from free food to meals and financial help with rent, mov. Housing needs can be addressed by Catholic Charities, including rental assistance and homeless prevention. United Methodist Mexican-American Ministries helps people regardless of religion, race, background, or religion. However a focus is on migrants. This is a Christian ministry that focuses on Hispanics, but will assist anyone. Services offered by the non-profit charity include emergency financial assistance, family practice medical care, as well as a free dental clinic.

  • There are also free books and school supplies including Christian reading materials, immigration services, food and nutrition program, vacation bible school, learning skills classes, and parenting classes, among others. Hays Churches and Catholic Charities is another option. They partner with both the northern and western branches (see above) to serve the working poor, seniors, and disabled. Some emergency financial aid may be offered for rent, medications, or utilities (as funding allows). Other resources in the Ellis County and nearby areas include food, meals, clothing, help for seniors, low income housing, and more. Free food pantries in northern and western Kansas

Hoisington Community Food Bank offers emergency assistance on a temporary basis. Get a one weeks supply of food at a time of crisis, and other items like toiletries and even detergent. Location is 467 W. 3rd St., Hoisington, Kansas 67544, call (620) 653-2119

First Southern Baptist Church covers Seward County KS. Free food, baby formula, and personal stuff, such as soap or detergent, can be provided from 621 N Western Ave, Liberal, KS 67901. Manna House can help families, or single people, in Ford County. Free groceries as well as meals are offered from 1012 1st Ave, Dodge City, KS 67801. There are also holiday baskets too, such as at Christmas or Thanksgiving. Dial (620) 227-6707

Free clinics and health centers

Medical and Dental Care clinics in Great Bend, Kansas is located at 1905 19th St, Great Bend, KS 67530. Local individuals and families, regardless of their ability to pay for their medical care, can access primary healthcare services, including behavioral healthcare, or free Doctor Office Visits. Barton County Health Department supports all local counties, not just Barton. Many services are offered, including they want to ensure all children are current on their vaccinations and medications. The center can provide vaccines to those adults and children who need updates, and they can even provide foreign travel immunization as needed.
