Rent assistance
Local individuals and families who either are facing an eviction, who have lost their homes or who may be at risk of losing their homes may be able to qualify for help from the Salvation Army of Texarkana as well as the federally funded emergency solution grants.
Funds from the federal government funded Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-housing program, which was created from the stimulus program, are flowing to Miller County Arkansas. Almost $1 million in aid is flowing to the county.
While the stimulus program may have been contested when it was funded, the bottom line is that people are indeed receiving rent and housing help from it. The money being sent to the county is from Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-housing program, which is an offshoot of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. In total almost $2 billion was being provided to housing agencies across the nation.
The funds are being distributed locally based upon a formula that was used for the Emergency Shelter Grants program. The funds and monies will be provided locally for a wide variety of assistance programs and reasons. For example, families can get access to the funds to help them pay rent, money can be used for utility and air conditioning bills, to pay for moving costs or security deposits, and much more. Save on energy bills with Weatherization
The Central Arkansas Development Council (phone (501)-776-8446) administers the weatherization assistance program. The primary objective of the federal government funded Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) is to help people save on their energy bills. It focuses on low income, the elderly, and the disabled. It will help them conserve energy costs and bills for low-income people, primarily the elderly and handicapped, through the installation of energy conserving measures in their dwelling. The program is free to participants.
Arkansas Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program
The LIHEAP program, which is also run by the Development Council mentioned above, provides assistance and grants to qualified households to help them meet and pay for the cost of home energy and electric bills. Direct payments and cash grants are made directly to energy suppliers and utility companies on behalf of eligible clients to offset high energy bills and costs. This assistance program provides two types of financial assistance.
Crisis Assistance Program - The CIP program provides assistance and grants that can benefit eligible households. It focuses on those with an emergency, and it can to assist with home energy related crisis situations and hardships. More on LIHEAP crisis programs.
Regular Assistance - The amount of assistance provided to families will be determined by (1) household income and the region of the state they live in, as well as the size of the household.
Financial aid and case management services
In addition to the services indicated above, such as LIHEAP and emergency rent help, the SWADC community action agency provides other forms of support in the region. They rely on government grants and can offer everything from ESL classes to help with finding employment. They are one of the leading social service agencies in Texarkana Arkansas and the region.
While the financial aid is limited, there may be occasional support for paying energy bills from LIHEAP and referrals to local Miller County eviction prevention services such as one time rent or security deposit help. Assisting seniors in Miller County is also a focus, and they provide applications to Medicaid and programs such as Elderchoices.
