Assistance programs in Manitowoc, Kewaunee, and Door County.

Find where to get short term or emergency financial help from Manitowoc, Door or Kewaunee County. Some of what may be offered is as follows. Churches, charities, and government assistance programs provide this help.

  • Financial aid - There may be rent help, mortgage payment or utility bills assistance, utility bill payment plans, and other support.
  • Free stuff - This may be food, medications, school supply items, clothes, gasoline vouchers, furniture, or Christmas presents.
  • Case management - Kewaunee or Manitowoc non-profits give free or low cost advice on reducing credit cad debt, medical or government created free health insurance programs, and more.

Many other resources, ranging from loans to financial help for deposits or bills, advice, free stuff, and other aid may be offered. Each charity or probgram listed below has its own terms and conditions.

Financial resources for basic needs, bills, and aid

Lakeshore CAP, Inc. is the regional community action agency. They are part of the nationwide poverty fighting organization and may be able to provide, or refer families, to assistance in a crisis.

Housing programs are numerous. Down Payment Assistance and Home Buyer Education classes and workshops are available. Or look into Rental Housing for low income and special needs individuals. Rental assistance may be available in a crisis, or rehousing for those families that have been evicted and/or homeless.

Food assistance includes information on pantries in Kewaunee and nearby counties. Several other resources are available as well, such as applications for food stamps. The federal government Emergency Food Assistance (TEFAP) is also available. A local pantry will allow people to shop just for the groceries they need and can provide up to 5 days worth of free food. Also receive free nutritional information.

Other social services include Parenting Classes, Teen Parenting Program, Strength-Based Home Visitation, and Community Response.

 

 

 

The community action agency Lakeshore CAP also wants residents to gain meaningful employment. So Jobs and Economic Development programs are available, including internship opportunities and job training in Wisconsin.

Manitowoc St. Vincent De Paul Society is made up of local churches and volunteers. The charity assists the needy with emergency financial and basic household needs. This can be funds for utility bills, rent payments, bus tickets, gasoline, and medical emergencies. Also get referrals other sources of assistance, including both private and public. (920) 682-9452

The Salvation Army has several centers in the region. Resources include shelter and rent payments. Utilities can be addressed in a crisis, including heating, sewer, and natural gas bills. Other programs include winter and work clothing, prescriptions and eye glasses, or transportation assistance, such as car repairs or gasoline money.

  • Kewaunee County has a center in Algoma.

Wisconsin Multiple Sclerosis Society Wisconsin Chapter will only help patients and their immediate family members. This can include coordinating self-help groups and financial assistance, purchase of wheelchairs and walkers, modifications to homes and automobiles and other aid. (800) 242-3358.

 

 

 

 

Kewaunee County St Vincent De Paul Thrift Store can provide gas and electric payment assistance to people with a disconnection notice. The store also sells school supplies, furniture, clothing, and more to the general public. The charity is based in Algoma and can be reached at (920) 487-2402.

Kewaunee County Department Of Human Services can process applications for government programs such as food stamps, Medicaid, and the Home Energy Assistance Program (WHEAP). The last one is a program to help pay heating bills during the winter or provide for furnace inspection or even replacement. Call (920) 388-3777.

Manitowoc County Human Services also administers several public programs, including the Home Energy Assistance Program. Some other resources include, but are not limited to the following. Medical/dental insurance as part of Medicaid, Badgercare, and Healthystart. Receive groceries from Foodshare. Caregiver Support and Services, including the Kinship Care Program, is available for people taking care of children that are not their immediate family members. Wisconsin Public Service - Sturgeon Bay office is at 44 North 14th Avenue. The non-profit can offer referral to energy assistance or weatherization programs. (800) 242-8511.

Women's Employment Project, Inc. offers numerous social services and emergency assistance. They include housing, employment weatherization and applications to FSET, the Foodshare Employment & Training Program. 1300 Egg Harbor Road, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235. Dial (920) 743-6915 for intake.

Door County Housing Authority can process applications for section 8. This provides rent assistance to qualifying individuals and families, and it is funded by the federal government Housing and Urban Development organization. Individuals will still need to pay a portion of their rent as thus is just a subsidy. Main phone number is (920) 743-2545.

Regional food pantries

There are a number of centers, churches, and charities in the three county area. Some of the leading centers are below. Canned goods, holiday meals, and much more is offered.

  • Heavenly Business Food Pantry of Algoma Wisconsin can provide food, groceries, and canned goods in an emergency. (920) 487-3186.
  • Luxemburg - Casco Food Pantry - (920) 837-2286.
  • Holy Rosary Food Pantry provides groceries, fruits, vegetables, formula and more to individuals and families in emergency need, including seniors and infants. 521 Juneau Street, Kewaunee, Wisconsin 54216, (920) 388-2088.
  • Koinonia Kupboard First Baptist Church of Sister Bay can be called at (920) 854-2544 for hours.
  • Feed and Clothe My People is in Sturgeon Bay of Door County. Dial (920) 743-9053.

Community clinics and free medical centers

These locations can provide health care on a sliding fee scale for both the under and uninsured. Patients may still need to pay a portion of their costs.

 

 

 

 

Ministry Door County Medical Center can provide both specialty and primary care. Services include family and internal medicine, rheumatology. Check ups, prescriptions, home health, diabetic services, pediatrics and more. If the center can’t meet your needs referrals are usually available to other specialists and hospitals in Wisconsin.
