Lutheran Social Services of South Dakota.

Lutheran Social Services will assist people in South Dakota of all religions, races, income levels, and faiths. The charity organization administers several assistance programs on their own, but they truly want to see people succeed and become self-sufficient. The non-profit believes in the power of possibility and hope.

Volunteers and staff from Lutheran Social Services (LSS) of South Dakota can direct families to low income housing, employment programs, credit counseling, and other resources. However they also work with them on inspiring hope, confidence and providing guidance. During these challenging economic times, the organization will reach out to the needy, help them grow, and offer other support.

Low income and affordable housing from Lutheran Social Services of South Dakota will assist communities in providing a home that is safe and decent. The units and apartments will be for low to moderate-income families, the disabled and senior citizens. For families of all income levels, including seniors, housing is a key element in experiencing fullness of life and maintaining self-sufficiency.

LSS operates apartment complexes in the state, including Sioux Falls, Centerville, North Sioux City, and Viborg. There are also affordable housing units for families and seniors and these include Meadowlands Apartments (Viborg, SD) as well as Broadway Apartments (Centerville, SD). Those units for the elderly are at Prairie Lake Apartments (North Sioux City, SD), the Gateway Apartments (Sioux Falls, South Dakota) and also Northport Apartments in North Sioux City, SD.

Center for Financial Resources deals with budgeting, credit counseling, debt reduction, and other matters. LSS partners with non-profit Consumer Credit Counseling Service groups to coordinate Financial Fitness Education workshops. The non-profit and its partner organizations will help clients improve their money management skills, reduce debts, and in general get finances back on track.

Lutheran Social Services sites in South Dakota also serve as a Consumer Credit Counseling Service organization. These can empower and educate families and individuals and help them master their finances.

LSS and its partner groups provide free and low cost services including debt management, individual budget counseling, information on low interest mortgage programs, and community education. Some of the specific workshops and classes include Student Loan Consultation, Financial Management/Budgeting Session, Debt Management Program, Credit Report Consultation and also Bankruptcy Counseling and Education.

Independent Living Skills from Stepping Stones is based in Rapid City South Dakota. It provides low income housing, life skills, and case management classes for residents under the age of 20 years. Staff and volunteers will help the youth self-sufficient and gain the skills and experience they need.

 

 

 

 

Case managers from Stepping Stones will assist the youth and help them complete educational goals, develop relationships and gain employment skills with volunteers, counselors, and, if needed, adult physicians for mental and/or physical health care. Classes and workshops are help for renters rights, budgeting, education planning, money management, and LSS can also provide referrals. When it is time to venture out on their own, they can get details on housing and rental assistance programs in the state. The Stepping Stones program is also certified by the South Dakota Department of Social Services.

LSS Education and Childcare Services emphasize enriching, hands-on activities that keep children engaged in learning and growing. Staff and teachers focus on helping each child and student succeed by providing a caring environment to them and help them gain a strong relationships.

Students, especially those from low income families, often enjoy an academic jump-start that serves them throughout their lives. The Lutheran Services Childcare and Education Services are approved and authorized by many groups. Some of the supporters are the Council on Accreditation and these programs are also licensed by the state of South Dakota. Components are the After-School Program, Summer Program, Preschool, and also Infant/Toddler Enrichment.

 

 

 

 

 

Refugee and Immigration Programs from Lutheran Social Services of South Dakota helps individuals and families that are faced with cultural and economic hardships. A focus is on helping people find a safe and affordable home or apartment to live in. A wide range of services, case management, and hope can be instilled in clients. These services are specific to refugees and newcomers, while some services and assistance is also available to immigrants to South Dakota.

Assistance for immigrants includes English language training, case management, information on job training, immigration and interpreter services. Refugees are those who have been forced to flee their country because of war and persecution, and they can get help in the United States as well. Lutheran Social Services will coordinate for them case management, referrals to government benefits, job training, and English language training classes.

One focus is on individuals with limited English skills. So LSS partners with non-profit organizations and charities that serve people that fall into this category. Some of the agencies include schools, community service providers, local employers, hospitals, and even law enforcement.

Additional housing resources and assistance for renters is administered. LSS of South Dakota has the tools for individuals and families to be successful renters or homeowners.

  • Homeowners or buyers can look into a First Time Homebuyer Session or Homebuyer Express Seminar. They also provide a Homeowner Financial Management Session or coordinate Mortgage Foreclosure Prevention.
  • Renters can receive Counseling and Education services, information on financial assistance, landlord/tenant mediation, and eviction prevention assistance. Case managers can sometimes help tenants in South Dakota apply for a low interest loan in order to pay any rent in order to prevent an eviction.
