LASA assistance programs.

Assistance from LASA will help the working poor with basic needs. The charity and its case workers can offer support, with a focus on housing. However, referrals may be offered to clients for food or financial aid. Another focus is on giving out advice to people in navigating the benefit system, such as applying for section 8, disability or a job. So both homeless and hunger prevention is combined with case management from the Pierce County charity organization. Find how to get help from LASA below.

LASA information on financial aid

When it comes to financial assistance, this may be available from time to time to income qualified households. Money or a short term loan is only offered to participants who meet strict eligibility requirements, and the charity will only pay a portion of an expense as resources allow.

  • Homeless assistance is available. This can include grants for back rent expenses at most once per year.
  • Vouchers for medications and medical equipment.
  • Energy and utility bill assistance, ranging from heating costs to water bills.
  • The homeless may receive help in locating a home in Pierce County, and paying a security deposit on it.
  • Free bus vouchers can provide transportation is the local Tacoma area.

Find help in accessing new or more affordable housing. There are Support Specialists that help clients and the low income in matching their needs to available housing in the area. The assistance arranged by LASAS includes a financial analysis that provides the individuals guidelines for moving into an affordable home. Clients will get tips on how to budget and save for their rent, including how to estimate utility costs.

Some very low income families can receive information on applying for section 8 housing or financing for their rent. Or, for those that meet income guidelines, tenants may be eligible for assistance in paying first month's rent or a security deposit to find more affordable living accommodations.

There are low income apartments and housing solutions available as well. Also, churches that are part of LASA work to arrange short term shelter in the county. Some of the other options are as follows.

  • Shelter from Ainsworth House is for single moms, young parents, and their children.
  • Family Permanency Project is run in partnership with social services on Pierce County. Low income apartments are made available.
  • Transitional housing is available for the working poor across Tacoma.

Low income seniors may be eligible for minor housing repair or rehabilitation. Volunteers and specialists perform minor roof patching or help with yard work. The disabled may get help with modifying their home. Some of the resources are run in partnership with community action agencies and may focus on weatherization. Examples of this may be adding extra insulation to the floor or maybe a Hot Water Tank. There are also energy efficiency improvements made to Windows & Doors or Lighting.

The local Pierce County Food Bank operates through government grants as well as donations from local businesses, churches and organizations. However, that is not enough to keep the centers running, so they also need the hard work of dedicated volunteers, so please give back to the charity if possible.

The pantry, as well as the soup kitchen run by churches affiliated with Living Access Support Network (LASA), is intended to provide enough food for a family or individual to get by for a few days until a more permanent plan can be established. The long term solution will address employment or maybe applications for SNAP food stamps as well. The service is available for families or individuals a few times per year.

Education and guidance from LASA

Case management will help clients address the root cause of their hardship. There are different types of sessions coordinated by LASA. Some are one on one, and others are held in workshops for people from across the community.

  • Tenants can learn about their rights and responsibilities on leasing a home or apartment.
  • Support in applying for benefits or entitlements, such as SNAP food stamps as well as transitioning from Welfare to Work.
  • Legal advice, shelter, and support for domestic violence.

Family support is when case managers work with children and their parents. There is an emphasis on clients who are unable to provide basic necessities for their children or maybe young single moms that are have a family without ever having had the parenting support they needed to succeed. Services from LASA help to strengthen the capacity for families to navigate difficult economic times.

LASAS will provide a variety of programs for every stage of life of residents in Pierce County. Among the services offered will be workshops on strengthening families and addressing employment challenges. Clients will get tips on how to increase problem solving abilities and offer counseling. All of this is intended to break the cycle of poverty in the state of Washington and the Tacoma region.

The team guides welfare customers as well as the working poor in transitioning from welfare to work and ultimately self-sufficiency. Social Workers from LASA ensure that clients comply with the work requirements and goals that are set by case management. It will touch upon crisis intervention and supportive services to assist people in overcoming barriers. Sanctions, such as inability to apply for financial assistance for their bills, are imposed for those who do not comply.

There may be assistance to encourage employment as well. To this end, supportive services are arranged, such as child care or local transportation, for a limited time. This can be arranged when necessary to enable an individual to work. In addition to all of that, customers who may be experiencing substance abuse or mental health issues in their lives are offered additional assistance.
