Assistance programs in Karnes, Kendall, Kerr, Medina, Wilson County Texas.

The low income, unemployed, and people who are struggling in this area of southern Texas are served by a number of non-profits and government programs. Some of the organizations that can provide assistance with bills, credit and debt counseling, help for rent, and more include the following.

All five counties are served by the local community action agency. This non-profit can both provide short term help for paying bills, as well as programs to ensure people get on their feet over the long term. The agency is the Community Council of South Central Texas, Inc. Among other services and resources provided include utility bill assistance, Section 8 Housing vouchers, case management, as well as migrant/farm worker assistance.

Kerr County Area Christian Assistance Ministry is a local charity that provides free food, clothing, funds for paying utilities and energy bills, items such as prescription medication to persons and families that are experiencing temporary crisis situations or who have some other type of need for aid. Kendall County residents can contact Hill Country Family Services. This non-profit agency may be able to assist low to moderate income individuals and families who are in a crisis situation, and the applicants must live in the Kendall county area.

Work with counselors from HCFS to gain access to services that can enhance an applicants well-being and foster either sort or long term self sufficiency. The programs that may be available will include a free food pantry and temporary financial assistance for expenses such as rent, energy bills, and other financial aid. Hill Country Daily Bread Ministries offers forms of non-monetary aid. Local churches work together to deliver food and groceries, bread and personal hygiene-related items to individuals and families in need of help in the community. Salvation Army of Kerrville Texas (phone (830)257-3620) is the worldwide non-profit that can provide direct financial assistance with paying rent and utility bills, free new or used clothing vouchers, or emergency food pantry that provides groceries and meals. The charity may also have free prescription medication assistance and vouchers, seasonal assistance (back-to-school and Christmas meals and gifts), disaster relief, and information and referral to government assistance programs and other local charities.

They are aware of both federal and state government foreclosure and mortgage assistance programs. Students in Kerr County and children may get free school supplies such as backpacks, Christmas toys or snacks too. Or there will be a listing of nation debt counseling agencies. Health and / or dental care is provided to the low to moderate income, as well as people with limited or no health insurance, by the South Texas Rural Health Services, Inc. The community clinic provides services and free or low cost health and medical care by offering medications, laboratory, access to a pharmacy, radiology, HIV/AIDS testing and counseling.

The non-profit clinic will also offer dental care, family planning, health education, nutrition counseling, access to food programs, substance abuse counseling and transportation assistance. Primary Health and Dental Care, based in Floresville Texas and which can be called at (830)393-9390, offers dental care for both children and adults.

South Texas Resource and Assistance Center, Inc. can help by providing free emergency food, clothing assistance and toiletries for families and individuals in life crisis or other life situations which prevent them from meeting their basic needs and helping themselves or family.
