People seeking help from Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Kalamazoo need to go through an assessment process in which plans and goals are set. If it is determined that someone is qualified, and if resources allow, then the St. Augustine Cathedral (SVDP) will try to offer assistance to address homelessness, hunger, or lack of employment. Programs include Diocesean Heating Assistance Program (DHAP), Free food from Loaves and Fishes.

There are different programs available in Kalamazoo County to tackle those and other barriers. The support from case management is also ongoing. There will be future interaction with the client to ensure that personal and financial goals are met. This is all done in an effort to help the person overcome the challenges they may be facing.

Financial assistance from Kalamazoo County St. Vincent de Paul

Heating bill help may be offered from the DHAP, also known as Diocesean Heating Assistance Program. Special collections and donations from the community are used to help low-income, and or struggling families pay their heating costs and more. Generally at most a few hundred dollars may be offered. There are also many other utility assistance programs in Michigan.

Housing needs can be met, with a focus on homes with children or a vulnerable individual, such as a senior citizen. The demand is very high, but SVDP as well as their partners do try to meet it.

Members of the Kalamazoo County community who are homeless, or on the verge of it, can use the emergency homeless shelter. There are sites for women of any age, men, or single parents with children as well. Other services are also given by the agency to guests of the shelter.

Residents of the center are provided with a safe place to sleep. They will also be served a free dinner and also provided with a location to use a computer, take a shower, or clean their clothes at a laundry. There may be budgeting classes, employment assistance, family literacy, parenting classes, ESL for non-English speakers, and tutoring. In some cases, emergency eviction help is arranged. This can include housing/rental assistance. Or if the disconnection of utilities is causing the potential eviction, then assistance may be arranged for those expenses too. It is available using government grants. In some instances, SVDP Society assists families in relocating to more affordable homes that are suitable for them. In these cases, funding may be provided to pay a portion of a security deposit.

Transportation and employment resources from St. Vincent de Paul of Kalamazoo County

Local transportation is provided to a small number of qualified members of the community. It will normally be some that a job seekers, or maybe someone staying in the shelter, can make it to job interviews or some other critical appointments. There may be transportation assistance for the disabled, someone in a wheelchair or homebound in a crisis. Senior citizens that are homebound may also be transported to a doctor appointment too. Society of Saint Vincent de Paul will offer help in various fashions. There may be free bus tokens passed out to individuals who are trying to get to job interviews, gasoline vouchers, or maybe a volunteer will drive the person. So various options are available, often depending on resources.

Community employers also partner with Society of Saint Vincent conferences on career counseling and employment programs. There is support offered in an effort to increase job opportunities for clients that are under or unemployed. Or there is also support for seniors across Kalamazoo County that want to reenter the workforce.

Some services might include employment counseling, resume preparation, employment preparedness guidance, interviewing practice sessions or tips, and referrals. All of this done will ideally help the person gain new knowledge or skills so they can get a better job in the future.
