Salvation Army Reno County and Hutchinson financial assistance programs.

The Reno County Kansas Salvation Army is a social service agency for struggling families. The charity organization provides everything from food to emergency funds for rent or housing, medical needs, and employment services. Free items and basic needs, ranging from groceries to holiday meals or Christmas toys, may also be provided from their clothing closet as well as thrift store.

The charity has been helping the underserved in the Hutchinson Kansas region for dozens of years. The non-profit will also work to provide one time emergency assistance when the disadvantaged family has no other resources available to them. This means that during times of disaster, cut off of utilities, or possible eviction, there may be vouchers or financial aid provided.

Financial help and social services

Social services, including financial support, has four main priorities. That is to prevent homelessness as well as hunger. The third and fourth goals are to help people impacted by a disaster as well as to assist with self-sufficiency needs, including employment or training.

Even when those criteria are met, the funding from the Reno County Salvation Army is very limited. They will treat everyone with respect and confidentially, but there are still many applicants that are turned away. When possible, the center may have money to pay for expenses such as back rent or water/heating bills. Hunger prevention will involve the food pantry, but when that can't meet the goals of the applicant, then a voucher may be given for groceries and the like.

Another use of the Salvation Army financial aid in Reno County is for employment and self-sufficiency reasons. In these instances, the organization may be able to provide some or all of the following.

  • -Free vouchers to buy clothing.
  • -Transportation assistance, including bus passes, gasoline vouchers, or rides from volunteers.
  • -Information on loan programs for text books.
  • -Children from Reno County, that are in elementary or middle school, may be given free back to school supplies, free uniforms, and other educational items.
  • -Parents can enroll into general lifestyles classes. There is budgeting, parenting classes, cook, shopping, and more.

Those are some of the main self-sufficiency services arranged. If a Salvation Army client is faced with other circumstances, then additional assistance may be provided to them as well if/when needed.

Housing, including shelter and supportive living for seniors, is another service arranged. The Salvation Army works to offer this I an effort to stop homelessness and to keep people safe. Not only is a place to sleep offered, but Reno County residents can also receive some basic medical care, clothing, sleeping bags, and of course hot meals.
