Any family with a high-deductible health plan (HDHP) should also look into free medical care before they call a doctor or dentist or hospital for surgery. There are many options available, however they do tend to focus on individuals with a low income. Save money towards medical bills or a deductible, or even get free health or medical care for free. There is low-cost or free medical from community clinics, hospitals that train student doctors or dentists, and other organizations. More on health care for free.

Pharmaceutical companies can also offer support for families that are struggling to pay a deductible. All health insurance plans, including those with large deductibles or HDHP policies, offer free medical care on high deductible plans for preventative reasons. This was implemented as the result of Obamacare, also known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The free care is guaranteed by the federal government, and it can benefit all families, but in particular people seeking help for their health insurance deductible. Some of what can be provided at no cost includes mammogram screenings for women, flu shots, cancer check ups, and much more.

Look into cost sharing to save on a deductible. There are co-ops, or non-profit groups, that share the cost of a health insurance deductible among many members. Many of these are religious based, including for Christians or Catholics. These charity type services will provide direct financial assistance to pay off some of the deductibles for members in good standing and that meet all criteria. More on Christian health insurance plans.

Patients have the right to ask a doctor or hospital how much a surgery, treatment, physical, etc. will cost before receiving the treatment. Knowing the up front costs is critical at all times to reducing bills and cutting back on debts, especially so when a family has a high-deductible health plan. After all, the prices of health and dental care vary widely, even in the same city or medical providers office.

Asking for charity care can in effect eliminate any expense from being placed towards the families high-deductible health plan (HDHP), if they have insurance at all. Save money or get discounts on high deductible insurance plans

This will involve the patient being very-proactive. They will need to shop around, ask for discounts on their medical care, negotiate, and take other steps on their own. So while these options will not provide direct financial help to pay for a health insurance deductible, they can still result in the patient saving a significant amount of money before they reach that threshold. As saving money on medical bills is critical until that deductible is hit. Learn more on shopping for healthcare prices.

If the price is not low enough, then high deductible plan enrollees should comparison shop or ask for flexibility with the cost due (see below). There are many websites and tools that people can use to look for a better price. There is data on prices for medications, surgery's and more, and the access to data is even increasing with more high deductible plans being offered to consumers. Be sure to get the price and quality of the provider.

Even if the price for a treatment is reasonable, anyone can always ask their medical provider for a discount on the service. Or ask that the health insurance deductible to be forgiven. If the cost of the treatment is reduced (or eliminated) from some form of discount, this will bring down the cost to the consumer and save them money as they work to meeting the deductible on their health insurance plan. Comparing prices also makes the patient more knowledge when asking for a lower price. More on medical bill forgiveness.

Get help with a health insurance deductible by opening a health savings account. This will provide the family with some fairly extensive income tax breaks. Reducing state or federal government taxes in effect amounts to free money. The savings can then be applied to a premium on an insurance plan, medical debts, or just controlling the deductible. A consumer can open their own health savings account (HSA), or see if their employer offers this benefit.

Find assistance with a health insurance deductible from a specialist. There are professionals that focus on helping patients deal doctors, hospitals, dentists, and drug companies. Patients can use the services of a medical billing professional advocate. These are specialists that can walk families through the complicated (and high priced) health care system we have.

The advocate will do everything from locating free or affordable medical care to finding billing errors, negotiating payment plans on treatments, and otherwise helping the patient understand both their premiums and deductibles. More on help from a medical billing advocate.

There are non-profit agencies and counselors (both credit and medical bill advocates) hat take a holistic look at the household’s financial situation. While the focus is not necessarily on paying off a deductible, the agencies can have suggestions for the patient on that cost as well as other bills.
