Hartford Catholic Charities assistance programs.

Most of the Hartford County Connecticut Catholic Charity locations provide assistance with meeting basic human needs. When an unexpected crisis occurs, that was not caused of your own doing and that prevents individuals and families from functioning, then short term emergency assistance is available, including financial, however it is rare.

The Hartford area Catholic Charities provide qualified people with free or low cost food, utility bill assistance, clothing and holiday meals and assistance. These services, and more, are offered through several different advocacy services and emergency case management.

Help for elderly in Hartford Connecticut

A more specialty service is known as the Southeast Asian Elder Adult Program. The Southeast Asian population has increased in the Hartford area, and this program can provide assistance such as case management and mental health counseling to these individuals. The objective is to reduce life stress, provide information, and in general maximize the well-being of Southeast Asians, in particular the elderly, in the region.

The elderly Outreach Program will help senior citizens. This Catholic Charity program is aimed at improving the overall quality of life for aging persons. It does this by offering supportive and counseling services to help senior citizens stay and live in their homes. There is also information on HUD housing vouchers for the elderly.

The outreach program provides the elders with assessment, crisis intervention, and behavioral health treatment. These services, and more, are offered to senior citizens and elderly individuals as well as their immediate families. Additional information regarding supportive programs and services in the local communities is provided by Catholic Charities on an individual basis.

This can also be accomplished through educational seminars on issues of caregiver issues, healthy aging, and support and emotional health issues.  These various services are offered in six communities, including Southington, New Britain, Berlin, Plainville, Burlington, and Plymouth Connecticut. The elderly program can also specialize on assisting Hispanics. Social workers provide culturally competent and specialized assistance programs to Hispanics. The resources include mental health interventions along with case management, advocacy, companionship, and other support to Hispanic elderly persons and their families. A Senior Center is also available for them in Hartford, and the location provides health screenings, socialization, recreation, and nutrition.

 

 

 

Catholic Charities and affiliated churches also help Hispanics, or the elderly, that need to understand financial tools available to them. Whether it is pre-paid card banking services for the underbanked or information on how to save money for rent or bills, churches and non-profits in Hartford CT partner with charity. There can be workshops on opening a bank account, building credit and so much more.

Catholic Charities Empowering People

Empowering People for Success is available in Waterbury, Greater New Haven, and the Hartford Area. This is a state of Connecticut welfare to work program. It was originally created to assist current and past recipients of public assistance including Temporary Family Assistance (TANF) to achieve self-reliance through intensive solution focused case management. Social workers will assist with care coordination that identifies and reduces the effects of barriers to sustained employment.

The People for Success program helps individuals and families to become self sufficient. Catholic Charities will ensure that clients have a full set of life skills and employment opportunities. Staff will assist clients to achieve the necessary level of education and skills for their desired careers, assisting clients to obtain employment, and minimizing risks to children through improving family safety.

Not only can clients get referrals to public and cash assistance, but The Empowering People for Success program is also committed to identifying family strengths and helping empower families and individuals to use these strengths to succeed in education, employment, and community building.

Assistance for immigrants and refugees in Hartford County

Refugee and immigration services are offered by most Catholic Charity centers, including the one in Hartford. The agency will welcome both immigrants and refugees. Maybe someone has faced religious persecution, or they have been forced to leave their country due to national disaster, warfare, and/or political persecution.

 

 

 

 

Regardless of your background or situation, the organization provides immigrants and others with comprehensive resettlement services that were designed to facilitate the individual’s acculturation into their new life of freedom in Connecticut. Programs and resources can assist families with becoming self-sufficient members of society and Hartford County. Most of the aid is focused on helping people within the first four months of their arrival to the United States.

Financial aid in a crisis

As noted this form of support is limited. It is mostly based on donations to the Catholic Charity churches in Hartford County. In general, referrals are given in lieu of direct aid. There may be some of the following.

  • Grants for paying utility bills from Connecticut EAP.
  • Free food from pantries or hot meals.
  • Blankets, clothes, hygiene supplies for the homeless in Hartford.
  • Housing resources ranging from a few dollars for rent or energy bills to transitional housing and more.
