Harrison County Mississippi public assistance.

State of Mississippi and federal government assistance programs are offered by the Harrison County Department of Human Services. The agency can provide the low income with information on government programs, public aid, and related services that can help them meet their basic needs and get back on the right track.

The Human Services Department is committed to offering short and long term support to the needy. The county will review with qualified clients all available resources that may be able to help them sustain the family unit. Residents will also be able to work with a social worker on self-sufficiency and personal responsibility. This, and much more, is offered for all Harrison County Mississippi residents.

The primary organization to call is the Division of Economic Assistance. The agency provides information and essential services to low-income and working poor individuals and families in Harrison County Mississippi.

While short term grants and cash may be offered, the objective is to help people find a job, increase their income, and in general become self-sufficient. Services offered to Biloxi and Gulfport families include food stamps, grants, job training and other supportive services focused on employment opportunities. Also get health care needs addressed from public programs such as Medicaid.

The state of Mississippi TANF plan supports the government’s goal of providing short and log term care to the truly needy while giving people the opportunity to be successful. This is achieved from job employment and transitional benefits, child care assistance, Medicaid and other welfare to work resources. No longer are these Harrison County services to be thought of as a public assistance program, but instead they do the following.

Government aid can encourage the formation and maintenance of two-parent families. Programs in Harrison Mississippi provide temporary cash assistance and grants so that children may be cared for in their own homes or maybe in the homes of relatives. Of course a goal is to end dependence of needy parents on government benefits by promoting increased income, job preparation, work and two parent families. Call the Harrison County Division of Economic Assistance at (228) 897-5600.

Gulfport and Biloxi residents can apply for public assistance from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). This is for meeting nutritional needs, and it offers monthly vouchers that help the poor and low income households buy the food they need for good, long term health. All regulations that are in place for the government SNAP Program are set by the US Department of Agriculture. Food stamps/SNAP is usually offered for people with low wages, elderly or disabled and live on a small income, work part-time or unemployed. People who receive other public benefits, such as TANF or LIHEAP, may also qualify for aid.

The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Program, or TANF, is available in the area. This will include, but is not limited to, short term cash assistance and the Work Program. The state will set work requirements and social services related to attaining self-sufficiency, and those are an integral part of Mississippi's TANF Program. At most clients can receive public benefits for 60 months. The Harrison County Division of Economic Assistance focus is the determination of work readiness, job placement services, and self-sufficiency.

TANF can provide short term cash assistance for low income and needy families with children up to age 18 years of age. Other conditions need to be met as well. Aid is offered to Harrison County families without regard to the applicants age, race, creed, gender, disability, color or national origin. Monthly government TANF money payments are made for needy caretaker relatives and relatives, including children, who meet low income levels. Funds can pay for food, housing, utilities, and other basic needs. Call (228) 897-5600 for more information.
