Urban League of Hampton Roads, which is located at 121 College Pl, Norfolk, VA 23510 and can be reached at (757)226-7589, offers rent and housing counseling. There is also free landlord-tenant dispute resolutions services, lawyers that help low-income tenants in Hampton Roads and eviction defense. They may have referrals to homeless shelters or loan programs for certain one time rental expenses.

Loving and Caring for the Homeless

This location offers shelter, transitional, housing, and other forms of low income rent help, including referrals. The poor, veterans, and single parents in Hampton Roads can use the charity.

 

 

 

Peninsula Rescue Mission

Runs a homeless shelter for those in need and homeless. Free basic needs are given too to people who use the shelter.

Portsmouth Area Resources Coalition, Inc. (PARC), Located at Methodist Church

Funds are limited. A few dollars may be offered in a crisis to help with rent, storage costs or a utility bill. A shelter is run by Portsmouth Area Resource Coalition. Get a place to sleep, housing and rent counseling, and meals. The non-profit accepts referrals only from the Crisis Center, Portsmouth Virginia Department of Social Services, and churches.

Virginia Beach Housing and Neighborhood Preservation offers a number of housing programs, rehousing as well as a homeless prevention program. There are also section 8 HCV vouchers, public housing and other solutions for the low-income. Also speak to a counselor for credit counseling, debt reduction, and referrals to home buying programs. Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia has limited financial help or loans for paying rent, mortgages and other bills. The charity organization is involved in providing caring services to all people of all faiths, backgrounds, and religions. They work closely with the Roman Catholic Church as well as the greater Hampton Roads Community to offer counseling, rent or mortgage assistance, and other support. The lead agency, the Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia, Inc. responds to the needs of families and individuals. Little Creek Fleet and Family Support Center is for military members. They can get relocation assistance and information on housing. Loans for military service members can pay for rent, moving costs, and the security deposit on the new home or apartment. They offer rent grants, emergency funds to tenants with an eviction notice and free motel vouchers too. The main resource is homeless prevention and rapid rehousing. Everyone from single moms to dads, the unemployed and people with no money can apply for help with back rent..

Army Relief would only have rent and financial help for veterans, current soldiers, and their families that are in the greater Hampton Roads area. Federal government grants can help with housing needs, ranging from mortgages to rent or energy costs. Military members/veterans can dial (866)878-6378.

Portsmouth Social Services - Emergency Assistance Office

A variety of financial assistance and social services are administered by the government agency. Some of the resources offered to the community will help low income meet basic human needs and the programs can even offer opportunities for self sufficiency. The rent assistance programs are primarily directed at helping those facing eviction as well as the homeless, particularly low income families with children.

The primary method they meet this goal is through a wide array of homeless prevention programs. In addition, get emergency financial assistance for paying for rent, food, and electric bills. All of this free grant money is offered to those facing eviction and/or homelessness. One time, emergency rental assistance may be offered to those facing homelessness.

Portsmouth Christian Outreach Ministries

They are a church organization whose hours of operation are Monday – Friday 10 am – 5 pm. The location will offer transitional housing for single unaccompanied females or males who are both homeless and they also need to be working at least 35 hours per week. Rent is due but is income based.

The program participants will also receive case management services. Note that the church does not provide temporary housing, shelter or rental assistance. Recipients applicants for this must start calling at 10:30 am for reservations. All callers and applications are served on a first come, first served basis.

The not-for profit serves the elderly, disabled and ow income Chesapeake Virginia residents. Programs provide emergency financial assistance, shelter, clothing, or emergency cash grants for rent or housing bills.

Assistance for the homelessness, elderly, single mothers and vulnerable. Everything from emergency rent help to money for utilities, clothing, storage cost or moving help and more. They also help with placement into shelters or transitional housing.

Eastern Hampton Roads and Virginia Legal aid
Free lawyers help low income tenants, minorities, and the elderly with housing issues. Referrals to rent help, free legal aid for landlord-tenant disputes, help in housing court and more.

Norfolk and Portsmouth Salvation Army. There multiple locations, including below. The agencies serve people of all backgrounds, religions, and ages. A large number of programs are offered. Those that focus on housing needs include rental assistance, furniture, a homeless shelter, motel vouchers and other household items. They can also refer people to other programs, including federal government and state of Virginia rent and housing assistance. Case management is offered too.

Section 8 Housing Choice vouchers, rent subsidized homes or apartments, home buying help, and other low income programs are part of the regional Housing authorities. They help the very low income with income based homes, in which 30% of income goes to pay rent and utility costs. Public Housing, emergency section 8 vouchers, and other aid is arranged.
