Assistance programs from Georgia Power.

Find financial assistance programs from Georgia Power for paying utilities, including from the government or non-profits. Some of the resources for low-income families include payment plans, H.E.A.T., Project SHARE, and weatherization. Or locate free energy saving or conservation programs. Get help with bills from Georgia Power below.

Emergency financial assistance from Georgia Power

The Salvation Army, Georgia Power, and other non-profits have partnered together to create a resource known as Project SHARE. The program is funded by tax deductible donations from customers, local businesses, and matching grants from Georgia Power. All of the funds go towards giving electric and power bill assistance to those who truly need financial help. A focus in on forgiving utility bills of low-income families, the disabled, seniors or single moms.

Project SHARE provides a way for people to provide assistance to a neighbor in need of help. All of the money will help less fortunate Georgia Power customers pay their electric or light bills, and keep their service on. In addition, all of the funds people donate to the charity program go towards helping someone in your local Georgia town or county.

In most years, the Georgia Power Project SHARE provides financial assistance with paying electric and utility bills to over 50,000 families, many of them who received their electric service from Georgia Power. The Salvation Army in your community both accepts applications, distributes funds, and also collects donations if you decide to donate directly to them. Salvation Army in one of the non-profit resources for Georgia Power too, and call 770-441-6200 (outside Atlanta) or dial 1-800-257-4273 (inside metro Atlanta).

Georgia Power payment plans

Individuals that are faced with a hardship, including people with no money or a low-income, can try to make their utility bills more manageable. Georgia Power Company will often enter into payment arrangements with the customer or individual to provide them more time to get back on track with paying their energy bills. Part of this may include utility bill forgiveness or a deferral / reduction in the amount due. Call them for more information regarding individual payment plans.

The Georgia H.E.A.T. fuel fund program is offered for low-income households. This service can help people pay their monthly energy bills through partnerships with state government, concerned citizens, energy companies, community action agencies, corporations, and other non-profit organizations.

Emergency funds for utility bills from the H.E.A.T. program may be able to assist the household with a hardship or who is experiencing a potential loss of energy service or disconnection. Financial assistance is also offered to people who need help with getting their electric service restored by Georgia Power Company. This is a donation program, and resources are limited.

Reduced rates and fees from Georgia Power

Georgia Power can waive or lower certain fees and costs for low income customers. For example, one service can reduce the monthly base charge on a customers account (which is $14.00 for electric and $10.50 for gas) and in effect waive these costs. This assistance is in place for senior citizens and customers who are at least 65 years old and who are also considered low income.

Another Georgia Power service is Budget Billing. This will charge the customer the same dollar amount each month on their Georgia Power bill. Then a true up will occur at least once per year. This will in effect average out the customers monthly expense based on the past 12 months of usage. So while it is not a form of direct financial aid, it does assist customers with budgeting and planning.

Energy assistance programs from the government for Georgia Power bills

In addition to the resources offered directly by Georgia Power, customers have other non-profits they can contact as well as federal and state government resources. The various financial assistance programs include:

Federal government funded LIHEAP grant money for low-income Georgia Power customers is an option. There is a crisis and long term part of the benefit known as the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which is administered by the Georgia Department of Human Services. Federal government funds and grants pay for this service, and are passed through to seniors and low income customers. Call 1-800-869-1150, or more on Georgia LIHEAP.
