Free ESL classes near you.

People who moved to the United States as well as low-income job-seekers can apply for free English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. The goal is to both help people assimilate to the US as well to ensure anyone who wants to improve their educational ability will get the help they need. Find free ESL classes near you or  online courses.

Learn about free ESL classes from non-profits including Catholic Charities, the YMCA, National Coalition for Literacy, Center for Adult English Language Acquisition and others. Or a number of companies provide free ESL classes, either online or on an app. Universities and community colleges near you will also provide free or very low-cost ESL classes to the general public.

There are both in-person, one on one training as well as online classes. ESL, or English as a Second Language, will help non-native English speakers acquire proficiency in the English language. This is a requirement for various career opportunities, social integration, and academic studies. The training is combined with free school supplies for students as well as teachers to help them learn, and learn more on how to get free school supplies online or near you.

Writing, read and speaking English is essential skill for people who have moved to the United States and are looking to improve their employment prospects. Most of the free English as Second Language programs will cover all four language skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) and the ESL is for Spanish speakers, Chinese, French and other languages.

National non-profits that provide free ESL classes

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) provides free ESL classes. The IRC is a non-profit, humanitarian aid organization that helps people affected by conflict and disaster worldwide, including immigrants and migrants in Central or South America. The organization also offers free ESL classes in multiple locations to refugees, asylees, and immigrants in the United States, and there is bound to be a center near you.

These classes from IRC are designed to help people improve their English skills so they can navigate their new lives in the US more easily. Both beginning and more advanced or intermediate courses are offered around communication, listening, vocabulary and more.

 

 

 

Getting a job, earning an income, accessing housing and getting a work visa are all goals of the IRC and their free English as Second Language courses. Sign up for free ESL courses and classes from the Literacy Volunteers of America (LVA). The LVA has been helping low-income adults, people with a GED only (or no degree), immigrants and others improve their literacy skills since 1962. The non-profit has almost 1000 affiliates across the country that offer free ESL classes to adults, including teens The LVA's program focuses on providing one-on-one tutoring to individuals who need help with reading, writing, and speaking English. Many universities, including community colleges or 4 year schools, provide free in person, online or hybrid ESL courses. They help students learn grammar, vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. While each college will vary, in general the curriculum is tailored to meet the needs of non-native English speakers, including those who wish to improve their skills for academic, professional, or personal reasons.

Colleges may even offer textbooks, handouts, and online learning materials. Some of the ESL material may be low-cost though. Additionally, students have access to ESL instructors who provide guidance, feedback, and support throughout the course.

Free English as a Second Language (ESL) classes from charities near you

In addition to those national organizations (many of which have local offices), there are many charities, non-profit organizations, schools, volunteers and other groups that offer free ESL classes in local communities, including near you. These organizations include community centers, churches of all faiths, libraries, and schools.

 

 

 

 

The YMCA provides free materials and resources to people, including immigrants, refugees, and other individuals who are not native English speakers. This includes textbooks, workbooks, audio materials, internet access, and other resources to help individuals learn English more effectively. Volunteers, teachers and staff help people learn English as a second language. Classes are offered online and in local communities.

In addition to these resources, the YMCA employs qualified and experienced ESL instructors who work with students to improve their language skills. These volunteer or paid staffers create free lesson plans that are tailored to each student's needs and provide feedback and guidance to help them improve their language proficiency. Catholic Charities, while national in nature, has thousands of local churches and charities that provide help to immigrants or refugees. This includes free ESL classes, textbooks, and learning material. The charity also helps people get work visas, find employment as they learn English, and get other basic needs, such as clothes and more. Immigrants, whether documented or not, have other charities near them that they can turn to for assistance, randing from educational support to job training and more. Free online ESL courses or apps

There are also many online resources that offer free ESL classes to people who do not have access to in-person classes. Companies such as Duolingo offer online options as do colleges including, but not limited too, Carnegie Mellon University that offers free English as a Second Language courses online. In general, students can use an app on their phone, tablet, or computer to learn.

Duolingo is a free language-learning platform that offers courses in many languages, including English. The bit sized ESL lessons are free, but more extensive classes have a minimal fee. The platform uses a game-like format to make learning fun and engaging. The lessons include speaking, listening, and reading exercises, and the platform provides immediate feedback to help learners improve their skills. Find details here. https://www.duolingo.com/.

The Open Learning Initiative (OLI) from Carnegie Mellon University is another free, remote-distance learning class. The OLI offers free courses in many subjects, including English language learning. All were created by experienced educational professionals. The classes are designed to be self-paced and can be completed online. The English language learning courses cover topics such as grammar, vocabulary, and speaking skills.

Coursera is a combination of free and/or low cost online platform. There are a wide variety of free ESL courses, however some of the more advanced classes (as well as certifications) will have fees involved. The company tailors many of its E-learning towards the low-income, immigrants, people seeking a new or better degree and others. The British Council offers a free, multiple week long ESL online course called "Understanding IELTS: Techniques for English Language Tests." It is tailored for low-income families who need help writing, speaking, reading and understanding the nuances of the language. The course is designed to help individuals prepare for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam, which is widely recognized as proof of proficiency. Free courses to learn English are offered online by Busuu. They have Native speakers, teachers, bi-lingual people including Spanish speakers and others help people either (1) learn or (2) improve their English skills.
