DuPagePads assistance programs in Dupage County

With a strong focus on addressing housing challenges, DuPagePads is a non-profit that the less fortunate as well as homeless can turn to. Some of the options include training from the Education Center, Permanent Supportive Housing, and a temporary homeless shelter. For those that qualify, they can learn about different support services and assistance that may be available to them.

Temporary housing and DuPagePads shelters

A homeless shelter service is officially known as Interim, or Overnight Housing. This is for people of all ages and genders, including children. Guests will be provided hospitality in the form of a meal, bed, case management, and access to social support. The exact location of the shelter can change over the course of the year, as various charities and churches all participate in hosting it.

Case managers from the shelter system partner with individuals, including the homeless, to help them gain self-sufficiency. This will touch upon parenting classes, employment, credit rebuilding, and similar services. There is also the opportunity for education and job placement/training. More information is below. Many faith based groups take place in the DuPage County Interim housing program.

Case management and money management programs

Most of the case management is from the DuPagePads Service Center. Support and advice is provided to individuals, including single moms, the homeless and parents. The goal is for the person to take the steps toward self-sufficiency and stability.

What is available at the center includes some or all of the following. There will be referrals to medical care, substance abuse and mental health services if needed. Lunches, personal hygiene items, and basic needs such as clothing may be passed out too.

But the goal of what is offered at the DuPagePads main center is to really address the cause of the hardship. Even if government benefits, such as section 8 or disability, can assist the person, then information on that application process will be offered. Then, eventual placement into a low income apartment may be possible.

Education and Employment is critical to housing stability and staying current on rental payments. So to that end, case managers from the community, including partner churches, can make referrals to DuPagePads Employment Programs. There are a wide range of job training programs, career counseling, work from home or gig jobs and more in the county. The formerly homeless to single moms, under educated and others can find work in Dupage County. Locate working from home jobs that are legitimate.

Once someone is enrolled, an employment specialist will provide individuals with the opportunity to gain skills and self-confidence, sufficient knowledge and more secure employment situations when available. The various education opportunities focus on building the basic educational needs to expand the skill base needed to obtain decent paying employment.

Many partners work on this too. They include on-site GED training in a partnership with College of DuPage, Career Development sessions, tutoring provided by Literacy DuPage, and even free computer training that is coordinated by volunteers from the University of Illinois.

There are also group workshops on personal improvement and workforce skills development. As part of these sessions, employment specialists and teachers from the group meet individually to assist with developing interviewing skills, resume writing, job searching techniques, and job interests.

Financial literacy is also provided for the formerly homeless or working poor. This is often combined as part of the educational sessions. Examples of sessions from DuPagePads and its partners touch upon opening a savings account, improving credit, Budgeting classes, and debt reduction.

DuPagePads housing assistance programs

Long term solutions from Permanent Supportive Housing can help prevent future evictions and homelessness. This is mostly for formerly chronically homeless families or single. The program brings support and stability to men and women. Social workers and staff will help them deal with complex challenges such as disabling health conditions, limited incomes and issues that may include substance use or even mental illness.

As part of this, the family may be placed into a low income apartment somewhere in DuPage County. They will then receive ongoing case management services from a specialist. This program is for those with a pattern of homelessness or evictions. They also tend to be victims of domestic violence, disabled, or have a mental condition. All of those education and employment services noted below will also be available.
