Dorcas Ministries assistance programs.

The non-profit Dorcas Ministries uses the proceeds from its thrift store to help the less fortunate in Cary, Apex as well as Morrisville in Wake County. The aid offered is to address a short term crisis, however they also can direct families to employment or even scholarship programs.

Low cost thrift stores and free items from Dorcas Ministries

The mission of the agency is to leverage the funds raised from the Thrift Shop. The charity will assist low income residents as well as newcomers (such as immigrants) of the towns or small cities of Cary and Morrisville with their basic needs. They meet this goal by relying on trained, compassionate volunteers. The team will meet with each prospective client to discuss needs and determine how Dorcas Ministries can best help resolve the emergency.

The Thrift Shop will have a wide variety of gently or slightly used merchandise at very affordable prices. The merchandise is donated by generous members of the greater Wake County community to support Dorcas Ministries’ programs. Those who wish to donate are encouraged to bring items to the shop.

The items that people can buy include Clothing, winter coats, Footwear, Household items, Jewelry, Seasonal Items, Books, Furniture, and Toys at Christmas. Other goods may occasionally be offered too.

The Dorcas Food Pantry furnishes qualifying Cary, Apex and Morrisville residents with emergency assistance. The groceries at the site range from canned goods, fruits, frozen items, and fresh food. There are also cultural type foods for the diverse population, including Indiana, Spanish speakers and Asian community. The Pantry’s arrangement is similar to a grocery store’s in that it gives clients the opportunity to shop and select foods, rather than the prepackaged boxes offered by traditional pantries in Wake County.

Not only that, but the non-profit’s dedicated pantry volunteers work hard sorting, organizing, and stocking food that has been donated. They also assist clients as they shop for their groceries. The Food Pantry is open Monday through Friday 10:00 am to 12:30 pm, and Tuesdays until 2:30 pm.

Emergency financial help in western Wake County

Financial assistance is limited, but it may be available. The non-profit may offer help with past-due bills for utilities, including water or electric. Or there may be loans used for paying a portion of rent or a mortgage. There is also food assistance from the Dorcas Ministries Pantry. Medical needs can be met as well, from the free durable medical equipment and supplies (crutches, walkers, canes, bedside commodes). These are limited though to what is in stock.

To apply for any type of financial help, having a referral is beneficial. They can be obtained from the Western Wake Crisis Ministry or other agencies as well as DHS in Wake County. Also, applicants need to have Photo ID, proof of income for all adults, Proof of Residence such as utility bill in client’s name, or similar document, as well as documentation of Financial Crisis. This will normally need to be a large, unexpected, necessary expense or sudden dramatic decrease in wages.

Dorcas Childcare Assistance Program offers very limited financial assistance to qualifying Cary and Morrisville families. This is limited to households with four or five-year-old children enrolled in certified, high-quality childcare and educational programs. It can cover preschools and before and after-school programs. The service may also provide short-term assistance with the cost of daycare.

The funding is very limited. Committee members from Dorcas Ministries individually consider each application. They will review the family’s need and any benefit amount that may be offered, always with the child’s safety, welfare, and future educational growth as the main priority. The applications for Childcare Assistance are available online or at the Ministry. There also participate in other services, and find free daycare assistance in NC.

UNC also partners with the Dorcas Ministry on a mobile clinic. The service is run by volunteer nurses who provide basic medical care, whether immunizations, blood pressure checks, diabetes care, basic sicj care and more. The clinic is generally offered on a fixed scheduled throughout the year.
