There is emergency assistance available, social services as well as free stuff in DeSoto County. Clients of these non-profit, churches as well as charitable agencies may be a low income household, someone with a disability, senior citizens, and others. Affordable or free health care

Patients can receive low cost, high quality affordable health care from clinics in DeSoto County. Senior citizens can turn to the North Delta Area Agency on Aging (phone (662-) 561-4100). The non-profit agency provides important services and resources to senior citizens as well as older persons. There are programs such as  adult day care, case management, or information on government assistance programs.

The Desoto County Agency on Aging center also offers homemaker support, information and referral, free legal assistance and advice, or hot or frozen meals. Or the elderly can benefit from MICAP, ombudsman, access to grants for bills, outreach, respite, use the SCSEP senior center and find free transportation assistance.

 

 

 

Free food resources, meals and programs in DeSoto County

Having trouble providing food to you and your family? If so, the Olive Branch Community Emergency Food Ministry is a place to turn to. The non-profit organization will offer food assistance as they provide emergency groceries, household items, and other products for up to seven days. The program focuses on Olive Branch-area residents who are having a difficult time providing food for their family or loved ones. (662) 895-2913.

Emergency financial assistance for bills and basic needs in DeSoto County

The Sacred Heart Southern Missions assists low income residents as well as local economically disadvantaged DeSoto County citizens through social services, advocacy, affordable low-income housing, rent assistance and educational and employment opportunities in its school and learning centers. Salvation Army of DeSoto has social serves and emergency assistance programs in place. Another non-profit organization that can aid people is Samaritans. Call them at (662) 393-6439. This non-profit gives assistance to low income and needy families in the form of help with utility and cooling bills, access to rent assistance programs, free food, clothing and prescription drug vouchers. The programs are focused on those who are impacted from poverty, natural disaster, domestic strife, emergencies, and short term financial hardships. Catholic Social Services offers countless services. It helps the economically disadvantaged and low income by offering advocacy, affordable low-income housing, and social services. While more limited, additional support includes emergency financial assistance, budget/credit counseling, debt reduction, teen pregnancy assistance, a food pantry, and a thrift store.

The staff at the faith based group coordinate other resources as well. Education and employment resources include micro enterprise assistance and revolving loans. Hernando / Nesbit Interfaith Council On Poverty is made up of local churches. Free food, groceries, and holiday meals may be served or passed out by the parishes. (662) 429-5789.

Community Food Ministry is a non-profit agency that provides emergency canned goods, food boxes, perishable items and groceries. Special seasonal programs may be offered. DeSoto County rent programs are administered by a combination of charities and non-profits. Funds are limited, and there is often a waiting list, but tenants facing an eviction may be able to receive help. Human and Social Services in De Soto - Families that need help with short term needs, and support in breaking the cycle of poverty, may be able to benefit from public assistance available in the county. There are a few resources provided.

  • Job placement and support from One Stop Job Centers.
  • Food assistance is provided as part of SNAP.
  • Temporary cash assistance can provide a grant for living expenses, ranging from rent to energy bills or food.
  • Social workers have information on low income housing in De Soto County, including loan and deposit programs from non-profits.

Three energy saving or grant programs that are administered by Mid-State Opportunity, Inc., which is the local community action agency include the programs below:

  • The Power to Care - This program provides help with paying the electric bills of low-income, senior citizens and elderly, as well as the disabled customers of Entergy. The community action agency will complete and submit applications for this program on your behalf.
     
  • Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) - This federal government programs, which is funded by DCS/MDHS, was designed to assist low income individuals and families to meet home energy needs and pay their bills.
     
  • Weatherization of Homes - Save hundreds of dollars per year on your energy bills. This is a free program that is funded by DCS/MDHS. The Mid-State community action agency certifies eligibility for the program and it makes referrals for weatherization services to WWISCAA in Greenville. Weatherization is free to qualified applicants.

Mid State Opportunity also administers and processes applications for a number of programs. Many of them are funded by the government. Examples of services include the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), SNAP food stamps, the Weatherization Assistance Program, as well as  Community Food and Nutrition.
