Columbus and Franklin County Urban League assistance programs.

The main services available at the Columbus Urban League are focused on housing, education, and employment. The non-profit agency offers assistance in the Franklin County area, with an emphasis on preventing homelessness as well as helping families obtain employment and increasing their educational levels.

The center is a HUD-certified counseling agency. The Housing Services Department from the Urban League can assist with various issues faced by tenants, potential home buyers, and also those that are struggling with paying their mortgage. Some of the main programs are noted below.

Renter, homeowner and tenant resources from Urban League

Assistance is for tenants. They can offer Landlord/Tenant Counseling or mediation. Any housing discrimination issues faced by renters can be addressed as well. In addition, for those that have an eviction notice or are behind on their rent, the Urban League may have referrals to emergency rental programs in Franklin County. Those families looking for a new, affordable apartment can also get advice on searching for a home or referrals to security deposit assistance.

The resources that are available for assisting renters across Columbus Ohio is extensive. This ranges from referrals to financial aid as well if anyone feels that they are being discriminated against by a landlord, they should call the HUD approved Urban League as soon as possible.

Homeowners can receive post purchase or foreclosure counseling if needed. For residents of Columbus Ohio looking to buy a home, Pre-purchase Education is available.

The Urban League is also fighting for the disadvantaged. This includes access to safe as well as affordable housing. They often partner with other groups on this type of service. Franklin County Ohio employment and educational assistance programs

Workforce Development and Career Services Department from Columbus Urban League offers employment assistance. Among other things, this will encourage economic self-sufficiency, life sustainable wages and family stabilization. The programs that are administered include job placement, free career counseling, retention and advancement. They work with employers in the Franklin County community-at-large to help them find quality employees and place people into positions with those companies.

 

 

 

Additional employment resources are from New Beginnings. This was created in an effort to help individuals successfully transition from self sufficiency to long term stability. The program assists those who are currently receiving food assistance in Franklin County as well as individuals who are unemployed.

The Urban League and New Beginnings offers workforce development courses. The services will range from resume writing and cover letter to employment retention training. After successfully completing the education component of the development program, participants will receive job employment placement assistance and referrals to employers.

The Education and Youth Services helps with leadership development and life-skills of teens, the younger population in Franklin County, and others. Various assistance programs and resources are dedicated to the younger generation.

One of the major resources is the Summer Youth Empowerment Program, which is an 8 week work experience program for youth under the age of 22. The CUL Urban League also participates in the After school Educational Enrichment Initiative in partnership with the Hannah Ashton Middle Schools as well as the Columbus Collegiate Academy.

More employment focused resources include First Step, which is Workforce Development and Education Program for Out of School Youth. It will offer them access to job placement, occupational skills training, academics, and college preparation. There is also a Summer Reading Program as well as Project Survival, an alcohol and Drug Prevention Program.

Head Start is for the youth in Columbus. It was created to leverage the talents, skills and resources of the Urban League. The program is the primary, nationally known Childhood Education service provider that is preparing young students for academic success.

The Urban League School Readiness Goals target literacy development, language, cognition and general knowledge. Children and youth can get help with physical well-being, learning and motor development as well as general social skills. CUL also works with numerous partners and non-profits on Head Start, including Ohio State University, Southwestern City Schools, Columbus City Schools, Canal Winchester Local Schools and Groveport Madison Local Schools, and Nationwide Children's Hospital.

 

 

 

 

As part of this, the Urban League will also help GED graduates as well as the undereducated find jobs in the Franklin County area. This can help minorities, immigrants, and people with limited or generally few opportunities. There are skills based opportunities as well as part of these GED only type jobs which the Urban League is a resource for.
