Assistance programs in Choctaw, Noxubee, Oktibbeha, Clay, Webster, and Winston County

Find how to get immediate financial help to pay rent, power bills and other expenses While the number of resources in the region is limited, there are still several charities, churches and government assistance programs as well as places for free stuff for low income families in the region. Get financial assistance near you in Winston, Webster, Oktibbeha, Choctaw, and nearby counties.

In addition to grant money to help pay bills, there are also free food boxes, clothes, furniture and medical care programs. Or locate social services ranging from debt relief to free lawyers, job training and other resources for the low-income, seniors, disabled and others.

Get government grants to pay bills from community action

Prairie Opportunity, Inc. is the community action agency. They are part of the nationwide network and are committed to fighting poverty in partnership with low income families. Case managers also can direct clients to financial assistance programs, government grant and other aid. They operate from a few different centers in Oktibbeha, Choctaw and other counties. The Neighborhood Service Center from Prairie may offer some or all of the following.

  • Housing assistance is available. This will usually come in the form of a partial rent or mortgage payment. If you are currently homeless, then funds may be available to pay a security deposit on a new apartment or home. Locate places that help pay rent in Mississippi.
     
  • Basic needs can be met by Prairie Opportunity. This will include free clothing for work or school or household goods. Some vouchers may be available too. Kids, adults, and people seeking a GED will get free back to school supplies too as well as uniforms, Chromebooks, and other goods.
     
  • Utility assistance in the region is offered. The main resources are weatherization, which will help people save energy. LIHEAP is available for paying electric bills, light costs or a deposit to turn the power back on.

 

 

 

  • A food pantry may have groceries, or holiday meals. Or get information on federal resources such as SNAP food stamps or WIC applications. The locations are great for short term needs, including a free box of groceries or baby formula.
     
  • Community Action employment programs are available. Case workers help clients gain work skills or find a job in counties such as Noxubee, Webster, Choctaw and others. There are real work from home jobs, freelance positions, online gig jobs and other resources. Look here for a gig online.
     
  • Other assistance from the community action agency includes free medications, VITA income tax filing, and information on loan programs for emergency expenses, whether it is a rent payment or utility bill.

Financial help for bills, housing and free items or food

Helping Hands of Starkville offers limited financial support. Qualified low income families, seniors, or the disabled may receive assistance for paying utility bills, including water and electric. Peter's Rock Temple is a pantry for the needy in Oktibbeha as well as other counties such as Clay. Get free groceries, formula, fruits, and more is for those families in need of food. Living Manna Church Food Pantry is a year round, emergency food bank. During the summer months a computer lab and help is offered from the non-profit charity. They help kids feed, the homeless, single moms and others in need. The pantry is at 941 S. Eshman Avenue, West Point, Mississippi 39773. Dial (662) 494-8788 for more information.

Salvation Army corp centers – These locations can offer referrals, emergency financial help or free stuff too. Clients can use on site food pantries or clothing closets. In rare cases there may be emergency funds to be used for rent to prevent an eviction or utility bills. DHS offices serve the region, including with offices in Starkville MS, Oktibbeha and Noxubee, L:Louisville and other places. The Human Services has information on government benefits such as SNAP food stamps, free cash from TANF, Medicaid, SSI and more. Free regional community medical clinics

Cornerstone Clinic – Offers medical care for the uninsured. The center is at 309 S Church Ave, Louisville, MS 39339. Get free family doctors, eye exams, physicals and care for low-income patients, adults, RX medications and patients on Medicaid. ouisville Medical Associates – This is another government certified rural clinic. A number of patients, many children and seniors, receive care. Doctors, nurses, and medical professionals provide assistance to the less fortunate. Provides services, including back checkups, information on prescription discounts, and other support. There are also basic teeth cleanings, free dental services and teeth extractions. Location is 320 MS-15, Louisville, MS 39339. Telephone - (662) 773-7500

Oktibbeha Family Medical Center is also based in Starkville. This clinic is just one location that is part of the Greater Merdian Health Clinic (GMHC). It is a family oriented health care center that addresses a patients primary needs. Call 1-601-693-0118.

Free dental clinics are located in the region. There are also pro-bono dentists, DHS benefit programs such as Medicaid and other resources that give free care. The low income and uninsured will get teeth cleanings, window teeth removal or free root canals, emergency surgery and so much more. Find free dental services near you in MS.

Macon Medical Clinic – This site is available to the general public, including for dental and medical. A sliding fee scale is in place for the low income or working poor. Macon Primary Care is a federal government Certified Rural Health Clinic. This means the center needs to provide medical and/or dental care to patients regardless of income.
