There are funds, grants, and vouchers (for motels or short term housing) provides by charities, churches and government agencies. The rent help is generally part of a homeless prevention program. This takes a holistic approach to assist residents of this region. Government grants as part of Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) or Family Assistance, Safety Net Assistance may cover a portion of housing costs. Salvation Army Financial and Income Based Services can help with housing, motel vouchers as well as back rent or utility bills (to stop an eviction. The center is at 414 Lake Street, Elmira, NY 14901. Extremely limited funding. Money may pay for security deposits, lodging at a motel, rent, and more. The non-profit also offers referrals. Project based rental assistance, including both TBRA as well as section 8, are offered in Lack Street Senior Apartments in Hammondsport, Hawthorne Court in Elmira, Village Square in Painted Post, Knoxville Senior Housing in Corning, and Seneca Manor in Hornell.

The program is known as Building Independence for Long Term (BILT). It focuses on long term stability. Financial help can assist with utility and rent payments, moving expenses, and even security deposits.

Salvation Army of Corning and Steuben

One time funds, including loans, may be offered. There is also a homeless shelter, transitional housing for Steuben County and limited, immediate rent assistance.

Hornell Salvation Army

Legal Assistance of Western New York - Bath Office

The non-profit has free legal aid and attorneys that help the elderly, disabled and low-income. There is free eviction defense services for people with a pay or quit notice. The non-profit also runs the Homelessness Prevention Program. Assists with eviction, foreclosures, and code violations.

Mustard Seed Ministries only help low-income families in Tyrone NY. Dial 607-857-0338. Various churches offer utility bill help, a few dollars for rent or a mortgage and other support - both housing and material goods.
