Catholic Charities Detroit and SE Michigan assistance programs

Catholic Charities in Detroit, Wayne and Oakland County MI is focused on providing short term relief to clients, guidance and free stuff. This will then provide the family time to explore long term solutions. Find details on assistance from Catholic Charities in the Detroit area, Oakland County and southeast Michigan. Most of the support is counseling, counseling, as well as free food, baby supplies and basic needs. While there are services available from Catholic Charities in SE Michigan that may be able to help during this time-frame, all resources are limited and come with a strict application process.

The charity relies heavily on donations. This may be material goods as well as fund raisers held. Almost all of what is collected will be used directly for the programs in question, and very little will go to administrative costs.

Free School Supplies are passed out during the summer or fall months. Children from low income families as well as single mom run homes can receive free clothes, backpacks, pens, pencils or uniforms. Other supply items may be pencils, paper, notebooks, rulers and more.

Each and every summer as well as fall, the Detroit area Catholic Charities partners with generous members in the community to provide the low-income and poor with basic school supplies. The items are intended for parents with little or no income, who can't purchase these items for their children. The goal is to ensure the child is not suffering due to the struggles of their parent.

 

 

 

Other items are available as well. There is a clothing closet as well as thrift store on site. These either pass out, for free, or sell goods to the general public at a low cost.

The charity will provides adult, baby, maternity and children’s clothes at no cost to low income and working poor families, including as part of the program known as Operation Layette. Men and women or the unemployed can use the service to find professional clothes for job interviews, work boots or uniforms, and more.

Furniture and appliances are for sale at the thrift store. Volunteers from the organization pick up goods from across Southeast Michigan, or many people donate them. They are sold to the public. Volunteers from across Detroit, Pontiac and nearby cities in SE Michigan restore donated computer systems. They will be given to students or adults that are going back to school, and are disbursed across the community. Additionally, free computer classes are offered by partners of Catholic Charities at different times throughout the community.

For patients that are struggling with paying for their medical bills, or that lack health insurance, medical equipment closets at Catholic Charities can loan out durable equipment to those in need. There may be wheelchairs, crutches, ramps, and more. There is no charge for the items, however it does need to be returned. In general, unless there are unusual circumstances, the equipment is loaned out for as long as the patients needs it.

Many other household items which are donated by the community are given directly to families in need, or sold at a low price. There may be dishes, blankets, utensils, pictures, silverware and all other sorts of items. The savings experienced by clients can free up their money for other bills, or the thrift store at Catholic Charities may help people make it through a crisis.

 

 

 

 

Using both programs such as Adopt a Family and the Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan Christmas Store, parents that meet income requirements (which change yearly) are able to shop for gifts or toys for their children. There are also Easter programs for children and their families to enjoy fun or a hot meal along with all the festivities. The last holiday program is for Thanksgiving.

Many people from Oakland, Macomb, Monroe Wayne and nearby counties need just a little extra help paying for these meals, so as donations allow Catholic Charities delivers hams, turkeys, all the toppings and food baskets.

Supportive and crisis assistance in Southeast MI

The first step is for the agency to give out information about social service agencies in the Detroit MI community or public aid from the Bride Card This is available for those from the region who need further help. Only as a last resort may direct financial aid be provided by Catholic Charities in the Detroit region, and in some cases they will even use a loan as part of Income Support. Catholic Charities can help with identifications for employment matters. Staff offer support to people, including immigrants, for obtaining different kinds of identification needs such as driver’s licenses, social security cards and birth certificates. There is also free resource navigation and more.

A major focus is on refugees, immigrants and women facing DV or that have a low-income or are pregnant.
