Housing Authority of Bergen County runs the NJ Section 8 Housing Voucher Program. Dial 201-336-7600. Address is 1 Bergen County Plaza, Hackensack, New Jersey 07601. They offer section 8 HUD vouchers, information on home buying loans and more. This income based, housing assistance program can also offer long term rental assistance and/or emergency Section 8 to eligible older adults and families, however there is a waiting list which can sometimes be closed.

 

 

 

Northeast NJ Legal Services makes referrals to renters so clients can get free legal service and consultations on housing needs. This support is offered for senior citizens 60 years of age and older as well as low income families in Bergen County. The center also provides information on legal rights and entitlements, free legal counseling on housing, landlord-tenant mediation and other legal aid for eviction prevention from 190 Moore Street, Suite 100, Hackensack, NJ 07601.   • Another option is LSNJLAW Bergen County Legal Services of New Jersey. The non-profit runs a hotline at (888) 576 - 5529. It can provide free legal aid, advice, consultations, and referrals to representation. Get questions on delinquent rent and evictions answered, unsafe housing, disputes on deposits, and other civil matters from lawyers.

Bergen County Division of Community Development also runs the ESG - Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program.   • Homeless Prevention Program is available to the homeless, home-owners, and tenants among others. Homeless prevention can offer limited financial assistance and cash grants for paying back rent, housing expenses, and even security deposits. Bergen County Board of Social Services also offers assistance, often in partnerships with local towns. There is grant money for security deposit or first month's rent, free furniture, rapid rehousing, and shelter for the homeless too. Back rent can be paid in a crisis too. Dial 201-368-4317.

  • Social Service Association / Ridgewood Area arranges rent relief for people in the city. Resources offered are for low-income persons, elderly, and disabled who are in need of financial assistance.   • City of Hackensack Social Services has a general Assistance program. The resource is a New Jersey state-funded program that provides rent assistance, TANF cash benefits and housing relief among other financial assistance programs. Community Hope provides housing, rent money and other solutions for veterans in Bergen County. The main program is the SSVF - Supportive Services for Veteran Families. Catholic Charities has many locations in NJ and Bergen County. They offer emergency assistance to families or tenants in an economic crisis. Jewish Family & Children's Services of Northern NJ has limited emergency financial assistance available, including money to pay back rent or 0% APR loans for housing. A major focus is on seniors over the age of 60 in Bergen County or those of Jewish Faith, however others can apply for help with their rent or a deposit. YWCA Northern New Jersey helps women pay their back rent or housing costs, including for storage. The location is at 214 State St, Hackensack, NJ 07601. There is also a shelter, transitional housing and help with moving costs for single moms - which can be first months rent. Call (201) 881-1700

Bergen County Community Action Partnership is a grant place to call for rental assistance and other financial help. They offer short term rent payment help to low to moderate income-eligible families who are being evicted due to a hardship they can’t control.
