Rental assistance in Bergen County.

Charities, churches, and government agencies in Bergen County New Jersey offer emergency rental assistance as well as help with paying overall housing costs. Learn about the resources that can help low income families, in particular seniors, the disabled and single mothers. Find how to get help paying rent, security deposits, and financial or free legal aid to avoid evictions.

The services in Hackensack and the greater Bergen County area are extensive. Apply for and get housing assistance or rental help from the Section 8 housing voucher program,. There are also free hotel vouchers as well as Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing grants. Free legal aid in Bergen County can also stop evictions. There may also be free government grant money for moving costs, storage fees, or back rent.

Some of the places to call for and apply for rent or deposit help in Bergen County include a local town office, charity, non-profit organization, or social services. Renters can also get free counseling, referrals, and eviction prevention legal advice is provided as well.

Center for Food Action - Has basic needs, including funds for paying security deposits or rent. The money is generally available to the low income and section 8 recipients. The funds are paid out if the applicant needs a new apartment or home. Any funds is paid to the landlord or property owner. In addition, the CFA can pay one month’s back rent to people who are faced with an eviction. Money can also pay first months rent too for a new home or apartment. NJ State Rental Assistance Program is offered in Bergen County. The state provides grants and funds to charities, who then assist the homeless or tenants.  Call 201-488-5100 or 201-996-7377.

Housing Authority of Bergen County runs the NJ Section 8 Housing Voucher Program. Dial 201-336-7600. Address is 1 Bergen County Plaza, Hackensack, New Jersey 07601. They offer section 8 HUD vouchers, self-sufficiency, information on home buying loans and more. This income based, housing assistance program can also offer rental assistance / emergency Section 8 to eligible older adults and families, however there is a waiting list which can sometimes be closed.

 

 

 

Northeast NJ Legal Services - Makes referrals to renters so clients can get free legal service and consultations on housing needs. This support is offered for senior citizens 60 years of age and older as well as low income families in Bergen County. The center also provides information, legal rights and entitlements, free legal counseling on housing, landlord-tenant mediation and legal aid for eviction prevention from 190 Moore Street, Suite 100, Hackensack, NJ 07601. Bergen County Division of Community Development also runs the ESG - Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program. Everything from motel vouchers to transitional housing, loans, or grant money for mortgages or back rent is offered. The main office is in Hackensack New Jersey. Call  (201) 336-7225

Social Service Association / Ridgewood Area - Resources offered are for low-income persons, elderly, and disabled who are in need of rental assistance. In addition, a food pantry, fuel, nonprescription medication and household counseling is provided on site too. The agency covers the towns of Ridgewood, Glen Rock, Ho-Ho-Kus, Midland Park, Waldwick and Wyckoff New Jersey. Call 201-444-2980. The office is at 6 Station plaza, Ridgewood, New Jersey 07450.

City of Hackensack Social Services has a general Assistance program. The resource is a New Jersey state-funded program that provides rent assistance, TANF cash and housing help among other financial aid. Bergen County Housing Coalition - The agency provides outreach, free or low cost legal guidance, information and referral to government programs. The location is 294 Union Street, Hackensack, New Jersey 07601. Or get information on immediate rent help, churches, and charities, workshops, and housing counseling from HUD certified agents. Community Hope provides housing and other solutions for veterans in bergen County. The main program is the SSVF - Supportive Services for Veteran Families. There will be financial aid to those facing eviction or the homeless. There can be funds for back rent, security deposits, storage or moving costs or even utility bill help. Also get information on affordable apartments, government benefits or grants to pay the deposit on a new home. Dial (855) 483 - 8466

Hackensack Salvation Army may occasionally have financial assistance for rent. Some low income families may be issued a zero percent loan. Funding from this non-profit is very limited. They may have referrals, including to shelters or hotel vouchers. There are multiple locations, and dial (201) 342 - 6531 for intake.

Catholic Charities has many locations in NJ and Bergen County, with the main one at 57 Pink St, Hackensack, NJ 07601. They offer emergency assistance to families or tenants in an economic crisis. The working poor, immigrants, and unemployed may get financial help for rent or mortgage payments. Or get counseling, free furniture and other support. The charity also runs the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) grant program. Call (201) 261-3048.

Bergen County Board of Social Services also offers assistance. Call 218 Rte 17 N, Rochelle Park, NJ 07662. There is grant money for security deposit or first month's rent, free furniture, rapid rehousing, and shelter too. Back rent can be paid in a crisis too. Dial 201-368-4317.

Family Promise of Bergen County is located at 100 Dayton St, Ridgewood, New Jersey 07450. Get emergency financial help for rental arrears or utilities (if unpaid would lead to an eviction). They help people on public aid, such as TANF, SSI, or section 8 pay the rent to keep their home or apartment. Call (201) 833-8009.

LSNJLAWSM Bergen County Legal Services of New Jersey - They run a hotline at (888) 576 - 5529. It can provide free legal aid, advice, consultations, and referrals to representation. Get questions on delinquent rent and evictions answered, unsafe housing, disputes on deposits, and other civil matters from lawyers.

Urban League of Bergen County - Call them to apply for rental assistance, including housing counseling, referrals, foreclosure counseling. Address 96 Engle Street Englewood, New Jersey 07631. Dial (201) 568-4988.

Fair Housing Council - Law advice to help with eviction proceeding and landlord-tenant issues. Location  131 Main St, Hackensack, NJ 07601. Phone: (201) 489-3552.

Homeless Prevention Program is available to the homeless, home-owners, and tenants among others. Homeless prevention can offer limited financial assistance and cash grants for paying back rent, housing expenses, and even security deposits. Bergen County Community Action Partnership - Community action agency are great places to call for financial assistance and other aid. They offer rental assistance to low to moderate income-eligible families who are being evicted due to a hardship they can’t control. Some clients may be issued a loan for their rental or housing payments. The non-profit is at 392 Main St, Hackensack, NJ 07601. Call (201) 968 - 0200. Other non-profits in the region to try include Puerto Rican Association of Human Development (dial (732) 442-1081) or St. Andrew’s Church (call 201-666-1100). They may help Spanish speakers, Latinos in Bergen County, and the working poor with housing, rent and other needs.
