Beaufort-Jasper Economic Opportunity Commission, Inc.

This is the local Community Action Agency that will help low income and struggling families. They have numerous programs that will, among other things, provide emergency assistance and cash grants to help pay bills. There may be funds that help with home utility and heating costs, clothing, rent assistance, housing, food and help for medical expenses to income eligible individuals and families. They also want to ensure people get back on their feet over the long term, and to meet that goal they have a job training program as well as a computer training center, all in an effort to help people find jobs, gain skills, or increase their income.

Their primary mission is to reduce both the causes and conditions of poverty in the local geographical area. They will do their best to provide a nurturing environment in which both struggling as well as low to moderate income families can seek assistance that helps them to become less dependent upon state and federal government assistance programs. They will always strive to give low income families a "hand up" in the direction of self-sufficiency, and not a "handout" or welfare program. This community action agency is overseen by the Office of Economic Opportunity in the Governor's Office.
