Austin and Travis County Catholic Charities assistance programs.

Social services offered by Catholic Charities may be able to assist those who are struggling in the Austin region, including Travis and Williamson County. This is one of the nation's largest charity organizations and they will try to help people regardless of their religion, age, or gender. Whether it is food, housing, meals, rent, or immigration services (including for undocumented) resources are offered.

A number of churches and other organizations partner with Catholic Charities of Central Texas to ensure the assistance gets to those who need the most help. They serve the local community with compassion and love through a wide variety of assistance programs and projects.

Austin area Catholic Charity assistance programs

The funding and resources will vary. Most of the assistance comes with restrictions and a formal application process as well. Much of it relies on donations from the community, so if you can contribute in order to help the less fortunate please do so. Some examples of the social services and emergency assistance offered is below.

  • Medical and health care needs. This can include consultations, prescription vouchers, and transportation to a doctors appointment or hospital.
  • Catholic Charities has information on dental care too, including sliding fee clinics. Find free or low cost sliding fee dental clinics in Texas.
  • Emergency assistance tends to be in the highest demand but is the most limited. The Travis County Catholic Charities may have limited amounts of financial assistance to help with paying for light, water, gas bills and rent.
  • For those who are currently homeless, or faced with imminent eviction, shelter and short term transitional housing units may be located in Austin.
  • Funeral and burial cost assistance. A focus is on the indigent who have passed away in the immediate area.
  • Basic household goods including food, clothing, and sharing baskets.
  • Aid for fire loss or disasters may be available, including emergency disaster response in Texas.
  • Over-the-Counter Medications and also Durable Medical Equipment.
  • Homelessness prevention including landlord/tenant mediation as well as emergency rent funds.
  • Immigration services, including assistance for refugees as well. Case managers can help acclimate newcomers to Williamson and Travis County Texas.

 

 

 

Long term Catholic Charity services in Travis and Williamson County

Catholic Charities also works on fighting poverty. They advocate for fair housing in the Austin region, work to fight racism and discrimination, and participate in anti-poverty efforts. A wide range of social services are arranged.

A major goal is also on employment, credit counseling, and general financial literacy. As when a client (or family) understands money, how to manage it and live within their means, that is critical to stability. In addition, having a stable job with living wages is also necessary to long term financial success. As is having access to credit (even credit cards), and understanding the risks to them as well as how to use them. Catholic Charities assists in this capacity. Travis and Williamson County Catholic Charity affiliated organizations

There are really dozens of churches and religious centers in the region that are part of the Catholic Charities  of Central Texas network. While each church will have limited resources, if a location can't meet your needs they may be able to refer you to some other non-profit or government program. Many of the centers have extensive information on government resources, including both state of Texas and federal government.

Locations will generally have volunteers and dedicated staff on hand. They try to support everyone who needs help and will do their best to not turn anyone away. The focus is on those basic needs such as housing and food, but as indicated above some other resources may be offered. Examples of the churches to call in Texas are below. Call one near you.
